Quotes

[first lines]
Elena McMahon: Some real things have happened lately. First, I wanted to know who. Who chose money over life? Steel and lead over blood and spirit? Who was it overlooked... the living? Who let distance and basic difference decide whose man was left behind bleeding out, and whose men medevac'd to safety? Who the war pig? Who the profiteer? Who the cold heart? The vapid soul?
Elena McMahon: And second... Second, I wanted to know why.

The Last Thing He Wanted - Netflix Movie Review
21 February 2020 | by alexpitt-345-971699See all my reviews

The Last Thing He Wanted is not horrible, but it commits one of the biggest offensives a film can make; it's incredibly boring. I would much rather watch a so-bad-it's-good film than one which is completely uninteresting. I honestly wanted to turn this film off, which is a shame with the talent involved.

Dee Rees has proven that she is capable of making great films, such as Mudbound, but all we got here was a generic film which added nothing new to the genre. Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, and Willem Defoe were all serviceable, but I have seen their acting much better than it was in this film and I was let-down with the fact that even actors I love couldn't make this film interesting.

It didn't help that the characters they played weren't fleshed-out in the slightest and came across as one-dimensional cardboard cut-outs. I did like the cinematography and the musical score, but they weren't enough to keep my attention focused.

The Last Thing He Wanted is not a train-wreck, but it has an uninteresting story that I wasn't invested in and I would have much rather spent my time with something else. I can't go extremely low with my score because it did have some redeeming qualities, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

SCORE: 40%
