This hour and a half documentary is said to cover UFO from their formation until 1993. Although the makers do not speak to original lead guitarist Mick Bolton - who seems to have vanished into the ether - they do speak a lot to Phil Mogg, Pete Way, and Michael Schenker. There is also a lot of footage with some classic performances, and some commentary by fans who followed them, including Joe Elliot of Def Leppard.
This is a film not simply for dedicated fans but for all fans and students of heavy metal/melodic rock. Although they were never as big as the big three - Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin - UFO were one of the most influential and innovative bands of their or any era as well as one of the finest. Not mentioned here are their use of strings on for example "Try Me", which is not included here.
We don't hear either from Paul Raymond, for one, but there is only so much can be crammed into ninety minutes. If you like this, check out "Strangers In The Night" - one of the greatest live rock albums ever recorded. If you don't, get a life.
The really good news is that at the time of writing, the band is still going. Although Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker are the only two original members remaining, (Mogg being the only one never to leave the band), Vinnie Moore has been with UFO since 2003. He may not be Michael Schenker - who is? - but he shines on the 2015 album "A Conspiracy Of Stars".
