childhood pain
kevin c20 February 2021
Sulphur and White tells the true story of high-flying city trader David Tait. This is the emotional cost and redemption of a broken man. The depiction of life in the turbulent City had a a ring of truth to it, and the horrifying abuse scenes are managed with sensitivity.

Why the vulgarity?
amirkzaml3 February 2021
The story could have been used to worn young youth about sexual harassment and that would have been a great and helpful massage too.But unfortunately though they didn't show any harmful sexual harassment scenes and they only gave expressions and hints to show us the meaning they overloaded the movie with hot nude sexual scenes that really disturbed the effort.

Utterly disturbing, but needed
cat-940-4927335 February 2022
Why have people rated this so low due to nudity? You know it's just skin right?!

Huge admiration for David Tait - the courage it must take to bare all to someone as close as his wife is unimaginable. To then carry on sharing his story whilst working for other children - what an incredibly brave man.

I know from experience how childhood trauma can manifest in adulthood, and it's terrifying, horrendous and mind-boggling. If we can just educate kids about sharing and honesty, maybe our future adults won't be as broken as David Tait was.

Talk to your kids. Do it now. There's no shame in being honest and open. I wish I had been.

Every grown adult should watch this movie, especially us men!
TruthSeeker4Life23 April 2020
As a elementary school psychologist, I cannot tell you how much abuse I see and just how much it breaks my heart to see kids who are powerless go through the trauma in their life and somehow find a way to persevere and keep going! But these traumas arise later in life and cause a great deal of problems as adults become parents and are married or in relationships. We so often learn to run from our feelings, especially us men, pretending like we don't cry when no ones looking, and acting numb, when honestly we are hurting horribly on the inside. I was fortunate to be raised by a father who always encouraged me to speak my feelings and to not run from the pain I am dealing with. What made that special is my father was a successful surgeon, so it wasn't like I could rationalize my father into being some weak person that was feminine. As I got older, I realized my journey was to help others with the subject that this movie details in such a deep and profound way. So many broken marriages, so many broken men and women, marrying each other without really knowing each other. So much neglected trauma and pain. All of it bottled up has got to mean it will explode at some point. We are reaching a point in our existence were we can no longer run from these traumas that we hold in the darkness within our conscious and unconscious minds. We have become our own worst enemy and I am seeing the biggest detriment it is having, our kids. The second leading cause of death in our young adults in America 15-24 is suicide. Our kids are more likely to die from their own hands. We have got to break the chain, because our kids are hurting, our kids are our LEGACY!

Powerful true story
forestfanatic9 April 2020
Growing up in South Africa, a young boy encountered sexual abuse and when moving to England has to deal with a pressurised job in the stock market, a new life and a new born baby, with all of the terrors of his childhood to deal with throughout! Much better than the 4.9 rating 8 is more a true reflection in my humble opinion .

Superb
mlwjacobs15 December 2021
Compelling and stifling - At times, I felt as though there was no air in the room. The writing is phenomenal, and casting was spot on superb.

I wanted to reach out and save both David the child, and David the adult. This film is so beautifully written, and deeply moving. David, a vacant entity, moves through life without any real connection to anyone or anything, except his need to cleanse himself, as though what happened was somehow his doing.

Filmed intelligently by creating a different visual nuance for every scene, every character, every mood, and every sin.

Spectacular.

This is heartbreaking but a must see. Fantastic take on the era too. Music is brilliant and the acting first class. Love it.

A must-see. Beautifully shot, heart-wrenching and deeply moving story
josie_f28 April 2020
Deeply moving portrayal of a much too common reality. A must-see for all backgrounds and ages. Even more so for the fact this true story was based on the life of NSPCC Ambassador David Tait. Brilliant cinema, thank you

Searing but ultimately rewarding
ChercheSmith7 April 2023
This isn't a movie for people who have barely survived abuse (of any kind) who have not also experienced at least some resolution to their grief. It's too intense for that. The story moves along slowly, with migraine-inducing depictions of the pressure cooker environment of trading. The scenes that are purely human interaction are not particularly satisfying, neither in content nor in execution, no doubt a purposeful choice of the director, and it is clear to the audience that there is something profoundly wrong with Mr. Tait; it is painful to watch him suffer not only in the flashback scenes but in the present, too. Much is revealed and some is resolved at the end of the movie. There is a touching interaction between Mr. Tait and a young South African doctor who tells him something revelatory. What this doctor says is as much for David Tait as it is for all who have suffered and who believe there is no love for them in the world because they have been told, falsely, they do not deserve it. The dysfunction, abuse in several forms and the behaviors of the people who would have you believe they are normal are all delivered with truth and realism.

It's such an important movie
susanlauricella10 May 2023
Perhaps to feel the pain of a child abused, as this movie has clearly accomplished, then more people will become aware of the trauma a child feels throughout their life. Shining a light on how many children are abused and never talk about. If this movie helps just one person through the mental anguish and turn for help then it was well worth it. Just. Heartbreaking.

This is such an important movie. And it was created to make you feel this child's pain and struggle as a young 10 year old. And how desperate you become when you have no one to turn to. The work he now does is a credit to him and his loving wife who helped him through his darkness.

An incredibly powerful story
latinfineart20 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is not an easy film. This film has an awful lot to say, is very well scripted, and has some really outstanding performances.

I don't get the low ratings, I guess people are turned off by work that's is this deep, and this meaningful. The kind of abuse that this guy was subjected to as a kid just boggles the mind, the monster that his father was and the degree to which his mother was inadequate for the task, was absolutely tragic and heart breaking.

The fact that he never sought out help, never knew where to start, to mend the damage done, the fact that he never really knew where to turn, I think is incredibly common, and it must be just a terrible burden to carry around. Life is hard enough without that kind of insanity added to the mix.

This is a very realistic portrayal of a hugely damaged man, and is a very well done. This cut right to the bone, and the fact that so many people are turned off by the nudity shows how many fake puritans and prudes there are out there, who have a hard time with a little bit of flesh in a film. It didn't detract from this film on any level, and was quite a mature approach. I highly recommend this movie. But, brace yourself.

Deeply moving
chris-jones-0825410 April 2023
I wouldn't normally watch a film about a city trader as I find them self-absorbed, money obsessed and without moral fibre, however I was intrigued by this true story and I'm also a big fan of Anna Friel (she's from my home town in Lancashire). The film deals with the child abuse delicately while showing the devastating impact it has on the adult man... a beautifully directed and engaging film..with great performances from all of the leads. Great use of music freedom m the respective eras also adds to the atmosphere. This is a film that anyone dealing with child abuse should be made to see - highly recommended.

Very Emotional Message With An Exceptional Cast
zac-682748 April 2020
David Tait trusted us with his years of secrecies, humiliation and unhealed mental wounds and I'm sure wholeheartedly to help other sexual abuse survivors seek the edification to recover and heal. Mark Stanley transitioned into character with an ovational Performance. Hugo Stone ( 10 yr old David Tait) also gave a noteworthy performance with great timing.
