The Road Ahead for YouTube’s TV Plans is Harder Than Ever

As things stand in the streaming platform arms race, the competition has separated into tiers. Netflix and Amazon have the longest reach, moving into territories around the globe with catered programming. Hulu has nabbed some awards success and, in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” still has a show that captured public attention in a way that few shows have.

Apple is (still) on the horizon; Facebook is on shaky ground, getting momentum for its content push. So where does that leave YouTube Premium, the Svod arm of the revolutionary video platform?

Reports surfaced Tuesday that YouTube Premium is mulling two major developments. One would see the service slow development of new scripted programming, sticking with its current crop — including the surprise hit “Karate Kid” spinoff “Cobra Kai” — for the near future. (The internal explanation is their slate is well stocked for the next few years.) The other is possibly being open

YouTube is making all of its original programming free to view

YouTube has announced that it plans to make all of its original programming free to view, including programming such as the Karate Kid sequel Cobra Kai, sci-fi shows Origin and Impulse, and Step Up: High Water. The shows were previously only accessible through YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red) for a monthly subscription.

“As we look to 2019, we will continue to invest in scripted programming and shift to make our YouTube Originals ad supported to meet the growing demand of a more global fanbase,” a YouTube rep said in a statement. “This next phase of our originals strategy will expand the audience of our YouTube Original creators, and provide advertisers with incredible content that reaches the YouTube generation.”

According to YouTube, all of its original shows and movies will be available to watch ad-supported from 2020, although some original productions – such as the upcoming season two of Cobra Kai – will remain behind the paywall until that time.

YouTube to Make New Originals Available for Free, Ad-Supported Viewing With ‘Single Slate’ Strategy

  • Variety
YouTube has concluded that its investments in original programming should have a home on the free, ad-supported side — not just tucked behind a paywall.

In a shift in strategy, the Google-owned video platform said that starting next year it will move to make all of its new original programming available for free for anyone to watch. With the change, YouTube is moving toward more mainstream celebrity-driven and creator-based reality fare, while it will continue to greenlight scripted productions.

Until now, YouTube Originals have mainly been available on its YouTube Premium subscription service, although YouTube also has expanded the shows and movies it makes available on an ad-supported basis.

“As we look to 2019, we will continue to invest in scripted programming and shift to make our YouTube Originals ad supported to meet the growing demand of a more global fanbase,” a YouTube rep said in a statement. “This next phase

YouTube Is Streaming Free Blockbuster Movies to Compete with Netflix

YouTube is stepping up their game as the site is now offering free movies for users to stream as they try to compete with the likes of Netflix. While YouTube is still one of the biggest sites around, there is an increased demand for premium content and the cat video capital of the internet is lacking a bit in that department. As such, they're doing something Netflix currently doesn't do by offering free movies, albeit in a pretty limited supply for the time being.

Last month, YouTube started to roll out these free, ad-supported movies without making a terribly big deal about it. So nobody would blame anyone for not noticing. Currently, their offerings are limited to around 100 titles, including The Terminator, Legally Blonde, Agent Cody Banks and the Rocky franchise, among other titles. Rohit Dhawan, director of product management at YouTube, had this to say about their new venture.

‘Wayne’: YouTube Series Looks Like ‘End of the F**ing World’ Meets ‘Kick-Ass’

Two teenagers on the run, looking for answers, trying to evade adult authority figures, dealing with their own repressed rage, in a series that premieres in January. It’s a template that worked for “The End of the F**ing World” this year, and the new YouTube Premium series “Wayne” looks like it’s aiming to follow in its footsteps.

“Wayne” follows the journey of its title character as he tracks down the TransAm his dying father bequeathed to him. As he navigates a criminal underworld with people willing to tie 16-year-old kids up and torture them for information, he takes on an adventure partner in Del (Ciara Bravo), who, judging by the trailer YouTube Premium unveiled, looks like she can handle herself beyond her years.

“Episodes” vet Iain B. MacDonald directed the “Wayne” pilot, while creator Shawn Simmons is a writer on the 10-episode series, set to premiere on YouTube Premium early next year.

YouTube’s ‘Cobra Kai’ Pilot Passes 50 Million Views, With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

While YouTube doesn’t fully break out viewership for its Premium shows, it does typically provide a viewcount for pilot episodes. And one of the service’s biggest hits to date, Cobra Kai, has just zoomed past an impressive milestone.

The first episode of the Karate Kid sequel series, titled Ace Degenerate, has amassed upwards of 50 million views since its posting on May 2, the team behind Cobra Kai touted today on Twitter with the hashtag #NoMercy. The milestone was achieved as the second season of Cobra Kai continues to take shape, with teen star Peyton List and the actor Paul Walter Hauser (of Kingdom fame) cast as recurring characters.

Cobra Kai's 50 million-figure dwarfs comparable viewcounts of the first episodes of other popular YouTube Premium shows, including the long-running Foursome, whose first episode has clocked 18 million views to date; VSauce’s Mind Field (19 million views); Joey Graceffa’s Escape The Night

Cobra Kai Season 2 Video Takes You Behind The Scenes of Mr. Miyagi’s House

The first Season of Cobra Kai is one of my favorite shows of the year. It was surprising great and everyone I know that has seen it has loved it.

Season 2 is now in production and with the way that Season 1 ended with Martin Kove coming back as John Kreese and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) starting up a Karate dojo at Mr. Miyagi’s house, I couldn’t be more excited to see where the story leads. Especially with Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) building back up the Cobra Kai dojo and finally finding success in his life while trying to help out kids in the process.

Today we have a video to share with you that was recently shared at Nycc and it features Tanner Buchanan (Johnny’s son Robby) and Mary Mouser (Daniel’s daughter Samantha) giving us a tour of the set of Mr. Miyagi’s house. Xolo Maridueña

YouTube Rolls Out New Originals in Germany

  • Variety
YouTube unveiled its first German shows, including two comedy formats, on Wednesday as part of the platform’s continued international rollout of original content for its paid subscription offering.

In Berlin for the launch of the three formats, YouTube Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl told Variety that the new shows were in line with the company’s global three-pronged approach. The strategy includes working with YouTube stars who have amassed large followings and “have creative ambitions beyond their means”; music documentaries and shows; and tentpoles, such as the hit “Karate Kid” spin-off “Cobra Kai” – so far YouTube’s most popular original series in Germany – and film acquisitions like Alonso Ruizpalacios’ “Museo,” starring Gael García Bernal.

The company’s new German formats include “Neuland,” a meta-comedy produced by Cologne-based Brainpool, featuring local YouTube personality Phil Laude as a former online star trying to make a comeback while fending off David Hasselhoff,
