Leiden 2018 Review: Hearts Beat Loud, A Modest Success, But Not Quite a Hit

If, based on the film’s title, you’d be inclined to give Hearts Beat Loud a pass for thinking it’s either going to be a saccharine musical dramedy or melodramatic tearjerker, you’d be forgiven. Doing so, however, would result in you missing out on one of the more finely composed indies that turn to music as a means of bonding and familial healing. Affectionate performances by a star-studded cast, a (mostly) deft sidestepping of tired cliches and a few catchy melodies all go a long way to ensuring you’ll have a good -- if not quite grand -- time at the movies. Crucial to the film’s success and story is the delicate chemistry between Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons. Offerman (Parks and Recreations’ Ron...

Arrivederci Saigon (Wilma Labate)

In director Wilma Labate’s Arrivederci Saigon (Goodbye Saigon), we follow four Italian women who were unknowingly sent to Vietnam for three months to stand alongside American soldiers, performing music for them nightly, under the guise of their manager sending them on a world tour. Labate immediately makes the connection between these women and the American soldiers through the factor of not having a choice in the matter. For the Americans, this was obviously the 18- and 19-year-old boys who were called through the draft to fight a war that some didn’t agree with and none understood. For Viviana, Rosella, Daniela, and

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions: Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret

  • Variety
The team at Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will get a lot of mileage out of their tuxedos at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Michael Helfand and Joe Matukewicz, the division’s two co-heads, are hitting Canada with eight films in tow — a collection that includes Oscar-hopefuls such as “The Front Runner,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and “Wildlife.”

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will focus on distributing these largely indie pictures in foreign territories. They usually leave the U.S. release to other studios. That may be part of the reason that, for all its activity, the division remains something of an enigma to most people.

“We’re a little under the radar,” said Matukewicz. “People sometimes don’t understand what we do because all our movies are different. No one is alike and we have a very diverse slate in terms of budget range or genres.”

They may not be a household name,

‘Teen Spirit’ Film Review: Elle Fanning Sings – Boy, Does She Sing – in Indie Musical

‘Teen Spirit’ Film Review: Elle Fanning Sings – Boy, Does She Sing – in Indie Musical
Teen Spirit,” which premiered on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, has a scene in which our mild-mannered heroine, an aspiring singer Violet, performs a song with such verve and power that everyone who knows her is left with mouths agape.

They’re all thinking exactly the same thing: “We didn’t know she had it in her.”

And “Teen Spirit” might also have that effect on its viewers — because while we’ve seen great things in the past from Elle Fanning, who plays Violet, we’ve never seen her sing and perform like this. Like the characters on screen, we didn’t know she had it in her.

Fanning’s performance is one of the most surprising things about “Teen Spirit,” a goodhearted and entertaining film about stardom in the “American Idol” era that also marks the directorial debut of Max Minghella. The actor is now following in

Interview: Brett Haley Talks ‘Hearts Beat Loud’, Working with Nick Offerman & Fave Feel-Good Films

Amongst this week’s Marvel and DC offerings, we also have the release of the quirky Nick Offerman-starring Hearts Beat Loud and, back at this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival, I got to sit down with its director Brett Haley to chat a little bit about the film.

Best known for I’ll See You In My Dreams, The Hero and the recently announced All the Bright Places, Haley’s latest is an endearing and heartfelt story of family, love and music and ranks amongst one the best films of the year; I got to chat with the indie director about his writing techniques, finding the story for Hearts Beat Loud and working with the awesome Nick Offerman.

I just wanted to start off by asking how the story sort of came about and what it was that made you and Marc [Basch] put pen to paper?

You know, it’s always an interesting question.
