I don't like having to say this.
31 January 2019 | by HenrySwansonFilmsSee all my reviews

This film is mostly killed by the voice acting. And that frustrates me, because they pretty much did everything else right. This is a very well thought out film, and I will admit, the transitions between past and present are stunning and enjoyable to watch. I really enjoy the color scheme, and the music is average but still very nice to listen to.

But the voice acting is so devoid of emotion that I can't really give it points for anything else. Here's a thing people don't seem to understand about voice acting; you have to show twice the emotion you do in live action to emphasize your character's emotions. In the only other Oscar animated short film with voice actors, Animal Behavior (which is fantastic, go check it out) they make sure to emphasize their lines. Characters yell, they talk louder than normal to get the point across without being obnoxious, characters cry. They don't do that here. It sounds like they took clips from a live action version of this film and dubbed them over the characters's lines. Another thing: The proportions are off. And that may be a stylistic choice, so I'm not going to fault it for that. But Emily really doesn't seem to have a neck, and that's so out of place and jarring that it bothers me. Even her daughter has a neck! Just keep it consistent for all the characters, or don't have it at all! Phew. One last thing-the ending. I was very tempted to give this a 5 because of the ending, but then Emily had to open her mouth and deliver another poorly-read voice line. So a 4 it remains. I don't like being a buzzkill, and I can really respect and enjoy what was done right here. So I just have to be the "guy with the opinion most disagree with" and hope other people enjoyed this film more than I did.
