Season 1 was pieced together with set pieces to showcase the characters, and the world the show is in - the bank robbery; the historical flashbacks; the non-sequiturs. For this season, on the other hand, the current showrunners seem content to plod through episodes in the most basic, boring, uninspired ways possible.
In this episode, we have the worst, cheapest looking sci-fi torture setup; the introduction of Shadow's mum (and young Shadow) as THE most one-dimensional, humourless parody of the 'cultured, cool mom'. And don't worry, there's still plenty of mind-numbing expeditionary dialogue.
Remember those characters from Season 1, where you couldn't wait for them to talk? Oh they're still here, but that sharp and interesting dialogue went the way of the Dodo. And Gillian Anderson.
Why am I even complaining, other than to vent? Unfortunately it seems a lot of criticism is levelled at the alleged 'liberalising' of the show, which is obviously bs. I'm just trying to wrap my head around how a show can, by actually RETAINING the original author, still manage to become the polar opposite of everything that originally made it great.

- GoofsWhen Mad Sweeney and Laura Moon drove the Mercedes-Benz S-Class car at high speed, a close-up of Mad Sweeney pulling a hand brake as to stop the car is shown. Every generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class (in left-hand-drive form) since the 1960s has foot-operated, rather than hand, parking brake.

Mr. Wednesday: [bids farewell to his car] Betty. Betty the Barbarian. You were forged from blue-collar sweat in the heartland of a forcibly-Christian land. You are not what you came into this world as, but instead a Berserker, and worthy of a Berserker's honor.
Mr. Nancy: [realizes what he's doing] Aw, hell no...
Mr. Wednesday: You are the standard of my world, for it might not be your way, I honor you in the most holy way that I know. A looming locomotive is the flaming arrow that soars through the heavy air from the bow of a Viking king. Let it strike you true and light your path to Valhalla!
Mr. Nancy: Valhalla? Ain't nobody going to fucking Valhalla! I'll see you in Cairo!
Mr. Wednesday: You will dine at the table of the hooded one. We will meet in your reincarnation.
