Storyline

This is a story of two old folks, who have spent most of their lives behind prison walls. Now, as seventy year old men, they have been granted amnesty. Both men have a passionate desire to change their lives according to certain plans. Time is one of the main characters in this story. The time that passes from one point to another and how it changes and influences human spirit and thoughts. These old prison friends Markus (Tõnu Kark) and Eduard (Sergey Makovetskiy) are not murderers and do not have blood on their hands. However, from a young age they have revolved around circles of thieves and other criminals. Their greatest crime has been robbing their country by deceiving it. State robberies and frauds have led the men to serve a long period of punishment from Soviet Estonia until today's European Estonia. It is now, when the cell mates receive their freedom. They decide to meet each other in a week at the hotel "Palace" to plan together their new, free life. But, before the meeting... Written by Ralf

More than a decent Estonian film
16 December 2018 | by BeneCumbSee all my reviews

True, the benchmark (prison) is not for everyone, the script is not smooth and it seems the filmmakers had limited resources, there are too many scenes and characters without any significance to the course of events (mostly good Estonian actors who usually co-star at least)... But the fine performances of the stars (Tõnu Kark, Sergei Makovetski) and some bright-line smaller-part-performers provide this film with a certain touch, both via giggling and tragic moments. At least, Rohelised kassid is not boring/annoying, it is without long static frames for the sake of "profundity", but I opine that it does not address the audience outside Estonia too much; for us, it includes a lot of joy of recognition, the actors and actress known of their versatility, and some out-of-proportion humour and scenes visible in the film director´s other production.
