Storyline

In a rural village outside Delhi, India, women lead a quiet revolution. They fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation. "Period. End of Sentence." -- a documentary short directed by Rayka Zehtabchi -- tells their story. For generations, these women didn't have access to pads, which lead to health problems and girls missing school or dropping out entirely. But when a sanitary pad machine is installed in the village, the women learn to manufacture and market their own pads, empowering the women of their community. They name their brand "FLY," because they want women "to soar." Their flight is, in part, enabled by the work of high school girls half a world away, in California, who raised the initial money for the machine and began a non-profit called "The Pad Project."

The Oscar Winning Live Short is a little irritating in the lines of being what News editing is. The documentary gives the feeling exactly what 'India's Daughter' or loosely saying, 'Slum Dog Millionaire' gave - A kind of reality but not directed from the heart and soul to enlighten anyone but for propaganda/ business/ money/ fame.

As for the documentary, dare I even say it is one, unlike what we saw in the fictionalized 'Padman', here the workers/ trainees don't use gloves (shockingly dangerous). This documentary will definitely pave way to many more foreign film makers to make documentaries in India about the ugly things in India and not so that they want to change things here unlike few foreigners who have made India their home to change the society for the good or to change themselves but just like the British - make it for their own profit. This video is one such.

The only reason why this has won an Oscar is that it's about women's health issue where the scenes are from a 'third world country' and giving it an Oscar will make more women support Oscars which is losing it's value, thanks to a lot of infamous incidents.

Off the topic, The Oscars are presented to people/ films depending on how it will affect Oscars and never whether they deserve it. A clear example is how low the Oscar fraternity has seen a few awards including 'Editing' and 'Cinematography' that they decided to present them during commercial breaks. If they hadn't had a backlash from people and Hollywood powers they wouldn't have given a damn.

Menstruation is a part of a woman's life and helping them with clean, hygienic pads is an unsaid must. But making it into a film in a village, not to empower them or enlighten them but to use them for one's own profitable ventures is a shame. If I want to see a documentary, I would rather re-watch videos of Arunachalam Muruganantham (which i did).
