Berlin: ‘Dalia and the Red Book’ – First Footage

  • Variety
Berlin — Towards beginning of the decade, Guido Rud’s FilmSharks brought onto Berlin’s European Film Market “Rodencia and the Princess Tooth 3D,” Peru’s first 3D movie, helmed by David Bisbano.

An ebullient about a clod-footed mouse-come-sorcerer’s apprentice who sets off to find a magical princess’ tooth and defeat a horde of invading rats, “Rodencia” went on to sell out most territories in the world, selling to Lionsgate UK, Ascot Elite and Netflix and proving a Grindstone Entertainment U.S. release via Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

“Dalia and the Red Book,” which now has first footage, suggests how Bisbano – and indeed the whole of Latin America’s animation scene – has moved on.

“Rodencia” was stock family-orientated adventure-fantasy. Set up at Peru’s Golem, though it re-unites producers, such as Alvaro Urtizberea at Buenos Aires’ Vista Sur Films, “Dalia” ploughs its own furrow.

It’s a much more singular story: Dalia,

Women’s Image Awards nominations: ‘Mary Queen of Scots,’ ‘Little Women’ lead

The Women’s Image Awards has announced its 2018 nominations, with the BBC miniseries “Little Women” that aired on PBS’ “Masterpiece” series earning a leading six bids on the TV side. As for films, “Mary Queen of Scots” secured five spots on the ballot, followed by the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic “On the Basis of Sex” and Melissa McCarthy’s “Can Your Ever Forgive Me,” both with four.

Given the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement’s push against sexual harassment and lack of equal opportunity for women in Hollywood, the fact that an organization like Women’s Image Awards exists is more important than ever. The group that is celebrating its 20th anniversary has just announced its nominations in 18 categories. The TV and film nominees are selected from a field of submissions from networks and studios.

Bali Festival Expands Support for Indonesian Film Industry Revival

  • Variety
Triawan Munaf, chairman of the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy (Bekraf) was on hand on Monday for the opening of the Bali International Film Festival (Balinale). His presence was intended as a sign that Indonesia, Asia’s sleeping giant as a film player, is rousing itself.

It was also an endorsement of the indie festival which, in its 12th year, is adding industry functions and seeking relevance far away from capital city, Jakarta.

Hosted in two Cinemaxx multiplexes in Denpasar and Kuta, the festival aims to reach different strands of Bali’s population, natives, long-term resident expatriates, and passing tourists.

A showcase of films by Roland Joffe is arguably the highlight of the event. The British director was a key figure at the BalinaleX industry conference on Sunday and is on hand through the week to present his multi-Oscar winning “The Killing Fields,” and Palme d’Or winner “The Mission.
