The shooters are described as being opposed to the "conservative" speaker at the college and one later espouses leftist ideals. In 2015, Texas passed a law supported by conservatives that allowed for citizens with gun permits to carry guns on a university campus. The law became effective for universities in August 2016 and for junior colleges in August 2017. As of the August 2017 air date there have not been any shootings at a Texas university that involve a permit holder.
