An entertaining romp.
18 May 2019 | by ZachRPhillipsSee all my reviews

College professors are a group of people who I typically have a certain level of contempt for. They tell students what to think rather than teaching them how to think, and they attempt to tear away any individuality which students may exhibit. For that reason, I thought I wouldn't enjoy this movie. It was about a type of person I don't care for & the synopsis of the film made it sound like a boring story we've all seen more than once before. To my great surprise, it was a very funny & unique film.

All the acting in this film is commendable. Johnny Depp does a brilliant job playing the melancholic but also eccentric college professor who has stopped giving a damn about niceties. The writing is also very well done. The comedy in this film made me laugh more than a lot of straight up comedies manage to do these days. When I first read about 'The Professor' I thought it was going to be a slow drama, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out it wasn't.

It seems to me that the reason critics hated this film while audiences enjoyed it, is that the movie pokes fun at elitist, self-absorbed types, who many professional critics regularly praise & consider themselves amongst. Bureaucrats, feminists & "corporate wh*res" are amongst the those who get mocked in this movie, which isn't often seen in cinema, especially in cinema with such popular & mainstream talent involved. A secondary reason why "professional" critics may have panned this film would be due to the still lingering controversy regarding the accusations made against Depp by former spouse Amber Heard. We've seen self-appointed moral arbiters pan films for similar things time & time again.

Overall there is a small amount to complain about and there is much to praise with this film. The story is a familiar one, but the funny writing, unique & brilliant acting makes 'The Professor' stand out amongst other films about terminal illness.
