After being forced to return early from summer camp, Dana and Sam are planted in the midst of their recently late grandfather's Buddhist funeral ceremony. Dana struggles to understand the older generation's traditions as it is one of the only connections to their Japanese heritage. Meanwhile, Sam has a greater sense of the real world than her younger, innocent sister and must answer her questions regarding religion and the transition from life to death. Near the end of the film, Dana crashes her bike near a river. She suddenly notices her grandfather sailing by, searching for something unknown. The film concludes as he continues floating on and the scratch on Dana's knee is mysteriously healed.
