The African monarch Akeem learns he has a long-lost son in the United States and must return to America to meet this unexpected heir and build a relationship with his son.

Shortly after the film debuted on Amazon TV, star Eddie Murphy stated he has an idea for a Coming to America 3 but he has no intention of making it until he is 75 years old in real life "...not made up to look 75" as he believes he physically needs to be that age, not just look it through make-up effects for it to be credible. Akeem's son is, according to this premise, the result of Akeem and Semi picking up women after the night out at the bar in the earlier film. But in the original film, some days after this, Semi says to Akeem (while cleaning windows at the fast food restaurant): "Do you realize I have not had sex since we came to America?".
