HOTTEST GUY IN K DRAMA ? HE'S HERE !
lyntonadam21 July 2019
Ji Chang Wook is the male lead of this show, and apparently he's just finished his two years of military service and has signed on for a new production.

I imagine his fans will be ecstatic, because JCW is quite gorgeous.

Yes, I'm a hetero male who adores K Drama Goddesses ( like Park Min Young and Jo Bo Ah and Kim You Jung and, oh, stop it ! ), but I do know a really, really good looking guy when I see one. And unlike Derek Zoolander, this guy is HOT !

Luckily, he also happens to be an accomplished actor, and forms half of the cute central couple in this murder mystery/rom-com.

I've been meaning to watch this show for a while and the thumbnail pic on VIKI ( with Nam Ji Hyun smiling sweetly ) finally got me into what I assumed would be a lightweight romance. I can't recall if I read the synopsis but I'm sure I assumed any violent mayhem would be minimal.

And it's not. The murder side of things can get quite intense, with the main cast involved to varying degrees as members of the legal fraternity. Another key element is some infidelity among the central group, because a K Drama must obviously have romance even if it's unwholesome. Conflict, after all, is supposed to be a crucial driver for any narrative if the screenwriting experts are to be believed. Then again, they used to say that a voice-over was taboo yet brilliant movies like "Fight Club" and "American Beauty" sort of killed that dead. Me, I reckon we need a K Drama where the main couple have EVERYTHING go their way for a change, and maybe incorporate some parody of the formula as a parallel story line. I'm ready to write it, suits !

Serial killers are not my usual cup of tea, yet it's done well on this show and an extra layer or two is skilfully revealed as the plot unfolds. The show is certainly watchable in general, yet there are some issues which I found frustrating so I'll now put on my complaints hat. We do expect the primary romance in any K Drama to hit a rough patch sometime ( typically in the middle ), yet I felt the "down time" here was excessive. If I like them, I want to maximise their happiness. As to the crime component, there is an extremely horrific event that comes to light late on which is glossed over too quickly, while a scene where a senior person admits committing a serious crime to some underlings doesn't even warrant a comment when the juniors are alone afterwards. Overall, I also think certain scenes could've been developed further : for example, a young woman mistakenly thinks a man is flirting with her and he never pursues the matter, yet she then thinks he's horrible. It works to some extent, but would've been funnier if she had fantasised periodically about having romantic dates with him or even a wedding day. And one final whine : too many songs on the OST plus dubious placement, with one during a heavy drama scene which didn't work for me.

Hmm, sounds grim eh ? But, I did say it's watchable and occasionally a flash of brilliance fills the air too. Two mismatched people are thrown together for a while and a scene with many tears is quite superb, being a giddy mix of sadness and humour. And.....the show is refreshingly liberal in featuring some passionate, um, horizontal aerobics.

The main cast in a K Drama are usually attractive ( I read somewhere that beauty has no use, yet it's something we can't live without - so true ) and I've already done my platonic swoon over the head guy. Femme lead Nam Ji Hyun is lovely, has a really warm and engaging manner and she meshes well with her man. Second male Choi Tae Joon is always a reliably affable presence ( love the laugh ), while Nara is the second lady. She used to be in K Pop group Hello Venus and does a good job, though she isn't given any showy scenes with which to dazzle us so the jury on her talent must remain out. ( if you'll pardon the pun ). Lee Deok Hwa is lovably crusty as the CEO, Dong Ha is suitably nasty as the bad guy and junior prosecutor Kim Ye Won grows as the show unfolds ( though much more could've been done with her character ).

So, please check it out: just don't expect anything of the quality of "While You Were Sleeping".

Another of my top favourites
tay-sedai14 December 2018
This was great! I love a good legal drama but of course this was focused mainly on solving one great mystery. It was compelling, suspenseful, and amusing as hell (I laughed ... a lot). It also happened to be romantic.

So I guess it had everything it needed!

The bad guy was very bad, but I could sometimes sympathise with him. Finding out the truth of what happened to make him the way he was took much of the series.

Anyway, enough rambling. If you're a fan of K-dramas and you haven't seen this yet, I recommend it highly.

Fun and cute but too padded
hjalsayegh23 December 2018
The show is fun and light hearted. Sometimes it turns into a cartoon with all the sound effects and slapstick but thankfully it's not over the top with that.

The actors are fun and some of the cases make it seem like a soul successor to the ace attorney games.

Two flaws that stop me from giving it more stars. first the shameless Papa Jones product placement. It's too heavy handed and makes me want to order Pizza hut after each episode out of contrariness!

Second is the padding. The middle of this show is just filler and could have been cut out easily for a tight 12 episode drama.

Overall it's a relaxing time with light hearted characters with a touch of mystery and likeable leads.

Perfect for me
raizamd30 August 2017
Like the story, because it's funny, romantic but with the mysterious touch, it's not boring. This drama show all kinds of emotions, which are perfectly portrayed by the actors, the leading couple had best chemistry, and the secondary characters are so funny that you fall in love with all the cast. The leading couple goes trough a lot of psychological changes, sometimes you're upset with them, sometimes you agree with their behavior, but this feels like life itself. This writer style always revealed part of the mystery in the half of the drama, but you need to go all the way to the end to get all pieces of the puzzle and for the romantic story, when the ending looks like it can happen to you, that's when the drama gets to portrayed real life.

A perfectly binge-watchable drama!
tanushree-raha101930 July 2021
Now you will ask what's special about this drama afteral it's the same old "who is the murderer" kind of suspense. That's true but it was actually one of the reasons why I enjoyed it and other reason is why he do that and the answer will left you in amaze.

The Male Lead: I am not a drooly fan of JCW but I love his work, he is method actor. Character grows in him. Here he plays a prosecutor here, he knows the laws are meant to be broken but he takes them as the only way to find justice.

The Female lead: Nam Ji hyun was good too and her crying scenes felt so real.

The Villian: Finally the person that plays the villain... I won't say his name in case it's a spoiler but... I love him. He plays the villain so perfectly that I hate him but because he played it so perfectly, I loved it? His emotions can be felt and can tear you off. This is the first time I followed negative character with such intensity! He stole the show here. I felt like I feared him but was also curious about him. Just when I felt like I knew everything about this character, it turns out that I was wrong all along. Honestly, I can go on and on about the villian but I can't since it will give spoiler.

The love story between the two main lead is quite meaningful because it spans over years and it grows and evolves. Second lead couples are also cute in their own way.

Overall it is a well developed, heart-warming but also very thrilling story.

Would of rated higher if the female lead wasn't so annoying!
taneesha-664772 November 2020
The female lead annoyed me so much and by the halfway point of this drama i had enough I muted her at some points, was not a likeable character. Great drama kinda longer than normal which made it seem quite slow at some points, male lead is one of my favourites could watch him in anything.

I like the story and the actors but I feel like the story dragged a bit at the end so maybe few less episodes would've been better.

Good enough
PennyReviews18 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Suspicious Partner started seriously strong. The mystery was interesting and thrilling, with gripping trial cases, though the main one was the lead, since the main characters were involved. The romance was strong as well as entertaining, with the two characters having chemistry and tension enough to make the love story interesting. However, towards the end, the drama couldn't hold the interest high. The mystery-murder case was solved too early or rather the drama should have been shorter by a few episodes. Especially the final episode was aimless, as the story had already concluded a few episodes ago. The romance got tiring and bleak as well. In addition, the leading lady's character got a bit annoying. Not that I dislike the actress, she did a great job with her performance and I loved her in her previous works, but here, the character was annoying. So, 6 out of 10.

Murder! Mystery! Drama! Laughs! Eye Candy!
chilligrrl28 October 2019
I don't know where they get all these handsome actors from, but this one is jam packed full of them! The show has a great storyline with a twisted serial killer, lawyers who love each other but rarely at the same time, great comedy, and a bunch of actresses who manage to look bored and victimized all the time, but it works! It's great from start to finish and the main male leads make it extremely pleasant to watch too. The lawyer office meetings are SO TYPICAL of every meeting I've ever been to and it's nice to see some real life turned into comedy. It's a show that's on fire.

Started good but...
ninnishka_alex29 July 2020
The show started good but after half-way through the show it started getting repeatitivw and boring. The lead female character got on my nerves with her unlogical acts and behavior. It becomes one of the few shows that i had to skip through the episode.

I am so addicted to this drama
thanhminh-1873915 December 2017
It's really an interesting rom com-the best among korean dramas in 2017, but it would be better if the producer reduced to 16/32 episiodes, and scriptwriter cut some unneccessary details.

Nam Ji Hyun shines as a lawyer with interior struggles. Ji Chang Wook succeeds in new role, other than action star.

Unexpectedly good
badea-bianca9316 June 2020
Yah, I did not expect to give this drama 10 stars because I've seen Healer also with Ji Chan Wook and I thought that hardly something can compare with that. But guess what, this one was almost as good as Healer, or maybe I don't know, the fact that JCW is the main lead might have had a big impact on me. How can he be so hot and cute at the same time? I always wondered if these amazingly portrait male characters in dramas are at least as half as good men in real lives too ? Anyway, coming back to Suspicious Partner, I loved that I did not have to skip when side characters are playing like I usually do for other dramas. Every single character in this show is perfectly created. I am going now to my next drama with JCW, K2.

Misogynistic
geewhiz4629 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this series for the most part - JCW had a lot to do with that - he is handsome - smart - attractive - and a good kisser - what's not to like !!!

He plays a prosecutor (Mr Noh) who has an unfortunate encounter with a female lawyer Hong Bui on a crowded commuter train - she wrongly accuses him of groping her and makes a scene. They meet later in a hotel where he boyfriend is cheating on her with another woman.

She offers Mr Noh to sleep with her - he says "lets do that" and plays along.

Later her cheating boyfriend is found dead in her apartment and she is accused of the crime. Mr Noh gets her off.

What follows is a search for the real killer.

Of course there is a dawning love between them which is complicated by the return of the woman who cheated on him with his best friend.

The annoying thing is the repeated references to how dirty Hong Bui is - how her hair is so filthy it is untouchable - how she doesn't shower and makes furniture smell. This was completely overdone and not at all funny. Also ridiculous was Hong Bui fighting and tearing out the hair of the woman who was cheating with Hong Bui's boyfriend - why would she suddenly end up living with her?

Total nonsense.

All in all it is worth watching - but Kdramas really need to show some respect for their leading ladies.

Not your traditional law drama
mikkiparker25 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely loved this drama and its characters. Ji Chang Wook's chemistry with Nam Ji Hyun felt very natural and I adored her witty character. A huge plus for making her a black-belt owner and generally switching the roles of man-savior and woman aka damsel in distress. Noh Ji Wook (played by Ji Chang Wook) wasn't a bad fighter but it was obvious Eun Bong Hee (Nam Ji Hyun) was the better-skilled partner in the relationship.

However, there were some problems I've had while watching the show. First, I didn't understand the need to make Bong Hee have bad hygiene as a 'cute' trait. They made her not washing up and taking care of herself when working into something to be adored and admired/loved which in real life is very unlikely. Secondly, they should address whether Bong Hee and Ji Wook actually slept together on their first two encounters. I understand that it was addressed in epilogues (spoiler alert, they didn't) but it would be better to write in into the script of the show.

Overall, the drama was very entertaining. The humor was entertaining and not as cliché as a lot of kdrama make their funny bits to be. The plot was exciting. The drama managed to beautifully blend melodramatic moments with humor so I've had great time watching it. The show is a worthwhile watch.

Wookie hotness is unbeatable....
wookiealwayshotashell27 April 2022
Makes you feel smile and chills throughout the drama. Not a intense storyline. But it can reach you. It has humor, suspense, romance. Ji Chang Wook x Nam Ji hyun chemistry is at its best. The old man humor scenes are freakingly hilarious. Damn why are Prosecutor, lawyer mains are so hot and badass. Song Joong Ki (Vincenzo), Lee jong suk (While you were sleeping), Ji Chang Wook (Suspicious partner) so cool roles.

It had everything!!!
Chaokage3 June 2021
This series has a very complicated history between pretty much every single character. It's one of those series where past events seems to link more than one person. As you discover the past, you'll come to find very shocking reveals that really affects the relationships of the leads and the people around them. Two things about this series that I enjoyed and hated are that it is very funny and heartbreaking at the same. The ending, however, will definitely be very satisfying. A must watch!!!

Some good parts but loses steam
phd_travel16 May 2021
The blend of comedy and murder thriller makes things watchable at least for the first two thirds. Ji Chang Wook and Nam Ji Hyun are cute together. She is likeable until she gets frustrating later on. He looks quite refined as a prosecutor. Later on after they hook up the romance back and forth becomes irritating and frustrating and the murder itself is more interesting. The serial killer is actually more fascinating than you would think initially and is suitably scary when necessary. Kwon Nara and Choi Jin Tae are the secondary leads who are both quite okay to watch. The series drags towards the latter part. The mysteries about the deaths take a long time to reveal - if things had been explained earlier it would have been better. 16 episodes would have sufficed. Then the irritating parts could have been left out.

An Average Romance and Plot
fake_moviestar24 June 2020
This was a bit of a disappointment. This show started off strong, I was fully engaged and found the romance and comedy entertaining. Then somewhere along the half-way mark I got bored. I think the problem for me was there was too much going on; the plot was romantic comedy plus a thriller/mystery, and I have found that the thriller/mystery has to prop up the romantic aspects in order for it to work. This show has those elements working linearly, so it was story line stacked on top of story line. I'm not sure why this didn't work for me, but it didn't. The acting was done well, the leading man was very good looking and fun to watch with the leading lady, and the main baddie was actually underused, as his acting was top-notch and very entertaining.

You rescued me...
alaningle71 November 2020
An ambitious prosecutor loses his job after failing to prosecute a trainee for murder. Their feelings grow for each other after he starts a lawyer's office and trys to help her prove her innocence. Intertwined in the story is a link from their past which will tear them apart when it comes to light. Excellent cast, entertaining characters and a serial killer to catch make for an entertaining ride. And a sweet love story which you hope ends well.

I am completely in love with Ji Chang-Wook
JennyAkhara24 March 2022
Let me start by expressing what killed this kdrama for me. There was too much back and forth with the love and the break-up and definitely unrealistic actions and reactions that were dreadful. Because you defended a killer I am leaving because you are hurting I need distance, because my father did this I am running away. Even when he got hurt, her reaction was like you should be mad because you made me worry. No one reacts like that. When people are in a situation where they almost lose their loved ones, all the negative and bad feelings disappear, and he constantly had to be chasing behind her. For someone who was so in love with the lawyer who sacrificed everything for her the storyline was just dreadful. If someone loves me in a way where most of the times they are cold hearted and harsh, I dont want it. Now I am not criticizing the actress, she did a great job expressing whatever emotion she was supposed to convey. Now why I still gave it a 10, because I watched this show only because of Ji Chang-Wook. I am obsessed with the actor and he did not disappoint. My favourite expression/reaction was when she told him today is day one and ran away and then shouted let's start a relationship and he said what relationship, then said oh that relationship, the way he smiled, his reaction and body language the bow and goofiness was on point, all his expressions are on point no matter what the feeling is. I couldn't take away point for the storyline because I came to watch Ji Chang-Wook.
