Simon Kinbergs directorial debut is just a bad ride the whole way. Dialogue is not just bad but also ruins aspects of characters from the other films in the franchise.
Acting, especially in action scenes seemed either stiff or comical with no inbetween. The story was predictable and borrows far too closely from common superhero tropes. Now I am not one for "subverting expectations" at every opportunity however the film felt cookie cutter; boring.
The one thing that I can think of that does redeem the film somewhat is the great period production design but this can't distract from the script and goofy action.
