Baiae...An ancient Roman city lost to the same volcanoes that entombed Pompeii. But unlike Pompeii, Baiae sits under water, in the Bay of Naples. Nearly 2,000 years ago, the city was an escape for Rome's rich and powerful elite, a place where they were free of the social restrictions of Roman society. It was the Las Vegas of its day. Now, a team of archaeologists is mapping the underwater ruins and piecing together what life was like in this playground for the rich. There were vast villas, elaborate spas, and raucous parties on barges floating in the bay. No expense was spared to create a wonderland. Baiae was also the site of some of the most treacherous political dealings of ancient Rome with Emperor Nero and his enemies hatching deadly plots against each other. And then, the city sank into the ocean, to be forgotten in the annals of history until now. What made Baiae such a special place? And what happened to it?

A really neat episode...though you don't see any dead!
30 March 2017 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

In many, though certainly not all, of the episodes of "Secrets of the Dead" you see the dead...mostly skeletons. But many other episodes just are concerned about archaeology. So if you wanna see skeletons and the like, this is not an episode to watch...though it is a really neat one about a city I'd never heard of before this. The ancient city of Baiea, sort of the Vegas of the Roman world, is featured here. It seems that although this was a city of the elite and the emperors went here for fun, games and relaxation, much of the city has sunk into the Bay of Naples due to volcanic activity. It's really interesting to see, as it's really not that deep and you could easily scuba dive some of the villas. The show is like a tour of the city--with looks at the submerged, non-submerged and excavated artifacts of the great city. All in all, a very good that really makes you want to visit this amazing city! Well made and never dull!
