- After putting Carolee to bed, Steve phones Cadman and learns that the TV appeal hasn't produced any leads. He checks on Carolee, who is still awake. Steve informs her that Cathy hasn't called, but Steve feels that Nick got through to her. Carolee fears that by the time someone calls, Cathy will have left town. Steve lies that Cadman has a theory that Cathy will return Stephanie once she thinks they've suffered enough. Nick berates himself for not recognizing the clues when he saw Cathy's earmarked baby book. An irritated Althea asks Dave why he waited so long to inform her of Penny's problems and becomes angry when she discovers that Penny had shown signs of illness, such as the time she ran into a lamp. He tells her that Penny has lost some of her peripheral vision, but the ophthalmologist told her he was optimistic. However, in private, Dr. Randall revealed to Dave that Penny's vision had deteriorated, and she would eventually have to be told that it wouldn't improve. Althea is horrified by Dave's words. In a nightmare, Carolee hears Stephanie's cries, but when she goes to the crib, it's empty. Steve arrives and says that they sent Stephanie to Emma's. Carolee realizes Emma is in South America, so Steve counters that Stephanie is getting her shots at Dr. Morley's office. Carolee says no. The doctor isn't there at night. She begs Steve to tell her the truth, to stop protecting her. He insists that Stephanie is fine. He hands the child to her. Carolee screams in terror when she realizes it's just a doll. Carolee's cries bring Steve running. He awakens and soothes her. It was just a bad dream. But Carolee suddenly remembers that Stephanie really is gone. It wasn't just a nightmare, she screams.—Skip Eastport
