Captain Mercer is mortified by his indiscreet parents aboard a commercial vessel hailing the Orville on account of mysterious technical problems. Lt. Cmdr. Bortus having taken long leave to sit on his egg and the XO accompanying Ed aboard, inexperienced Lt. Alara Kitan is given command despite weak protestation, as the exes go aboard by shuttle only to be transported by an unidentified force. Isaac works out its nature and tracks it down to a forbidden space sector, which Admiral Tucker explicitly forbids entering on a rescue action. The sulking crew ends up convincing Alara to risk her career and probably all their lives into the territory of the technologically far superior Calivon civilization, which considers humans and so on inferior bugs. Ed and Kelly have in fact been locked up in a replica from memory-probe of their NY former home in the Calivon 'space zoo', from where no creature ever escaped, so their only hope are negotiations with the zoo keeper, which prove risky too. Did You Know?

Similar to the Twilight Zone episode "People Are Alike All Over " plot where Ed Mercer and Kelly Grayson find themselves in an alien zoo. In 1960, future Star Trek actors Susan Oliver, Byron Morrow and Vic Perrin played Martians in the "People Are Alike All Over" episode of The Twilight Zone, which also featured Paul Comi. (It's worth noting that this episode was similar to 1964's "The Cage" insofar as the aliens put the space-faring Earthman in a zoo and read his mind to create a familiar environment for him.) Captain Mercer: Bortus, how are you ?
Bortus: I apologise for intruding upon your work.
Captain Mercer: No, no, it's fine.
Bortus: What is... that?
Captain Mercer: That is, ah, Kermit the Frog.
Bortus: I do not recognise the species.
Captain Mercer: It's... an amphibious lifeform, from Earth.

Not worth watching
17 September 2017 | by mocalerSee all my reviews

This was almost painful to watch. The timing of both the sci-fi and humor was terrible. The sci-fi took elements done in other shows and dumbs them down. The supposed humor was grotesque and not at all funny. For example, a member of the crew discusses how his species lays eggs to give birth. The captain then joked about omelets.
