Michael visits Roz's children with an offer of help and intervenes when Roz's daughter Chloe smashes up the gambling machines where Roz lost all the stolen money, exhorting his congregation to do the same. He also attends Vernon's inquest where Helen speaks out against a police cover-up and Michael confesses that he ignored her answer phone message to try and calm her son down. However the guilt ridden police officer Andrew Powell gives evidence damning his colleagues for needlessly killing Vernon, leading to the verdict Helen wanted. She is critical of Michael, who considers leaving the priesthood, but changes his mind when, officiating at his mother's funeral, all the congregation in turn call him a "wonderful priest."
