Stx’s Bummer Summer: Weak Box Office and Hong Kong Market Woes Fuel Ipo Questions

  • The Wrap
Stx Entertainment’s plans for an Ipo on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange are facing new questions given a volatile Hong Kong market and a recent string of box office misfires.

Melissa McCarthy’s “Happytime Murders,” which opened to a dismal $10 million last weekend, follows other recent underachievers such as Mark Walhberg’s “Mile 22,” which has pulled in $25 million domestically on a $50 million budget, and “Adrift,” which earned a modest $31 million on a $35 million budget.

Stx has helped shield itself somewhat from some of its poor performers by teaming up for co-productions, engaging in various output deals with backend bonuses and other means of mitigating risks.

But the studio which prides itself on mid-budget releases hasn’t had what would be widely considered a blockbuster outside of its two “Bad Moms” comedies.

Box Office: Will Melissa McCarthy’s ‘Happytime Murders’ Dethrone ‘Crazy Rich Asians’?

  • Variety
Box Office: Will Melissa McCarthy’s ‘Happytime Murders’ Dethrone ‘Crazy Rich Asians’?
The box office has been surprisingly strong this August, and now it’s up to Melissa McCarthy and a gaggle of raunchy puppets to keep the momentum going.

That’s the hope, as “The Happytime Murders” aims for a mid-teens opening when the black comedy launches across 3,224 locations this weekend. Analysts are comparing the result to Seth Rogen’s bawdy R-rated animated comedy “Sausage Party.” Rogen’s film became a massive box office hit, picking up $140 million off a $19 million production budget. “The Happytime Murders,” however, carries double the price tag, at $40 million.

The Happytime Murders” is set in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles — a world where humans and puppets coexist — as McCarthy’s character, an Lapd detective, re-teams with her former puppet partner to solve a series of brutal murders. [Cue “SNL’s” Stefon voice] This movie has everything: Sex, offensive puppet jokes, murder, Melissa McCarthy snorting something through Twizzlers… At last, we

Fiji’s 47% Tax Rebate Is Among Highest in the World

  • Variety
Filmmakers considering a tropical paradise for their next project often look to Fiji, an archipelago of more than 330 islands that boasts some of the world’s most beautiful coasts, lush forests and remote jungle villages. In addition, the South Pacific nation, which is a major tourist destination with nonstop airline service to many major cities, offers an aggressive financial lure: a staggering 47% tax rebate.

The bar is not high to qualify for this sweet incentive. Feature film and TV productions are required to spend a minimum of 250,000 Fijian dollars, or about $188,022. The project cap is $28,000,000 Fijian dollars, or about $13.3 million.

Making things easier for producers is the fact the Fiji boasts one of most developed economies in the South Pacific, with good infrastructure. English is the one of the official languages and widely spoken.

Notable feature films that have shot in Fiji over the years include “Adrift” (2018), “Cast Away” (2000), “Contact
