    Very much worth your time

Complex and very intelligent. Unfortunately the extremely common theme of conflict between a village/town/city and a determined developer/exploiter. Beautiful scenery and cinematography, fine editing.

Acting is all good. One of the characters is played by a person who has perfected the "sneer" affect - you might not like it, but it's pretty unusual and cool. Protagonist seems to maintain a proper balance of professionalism and suppressed emotional turmoil. Perhaps a few too many side plots. Maybe those will clarify and reveal the criminal mystery, but after three episodes I'm not sure.

Just finshed episode 3, certainly will continue.

    ---------------------

I've now seen the 1st and 2nd season. I don't usually give out a 10, but I think the series rates it. Very grim and complex mysteries, interesting characters, and fine acting. Beautiful cinematography and editing. Moral turpitude and moral choices. Can't wait to begin the 3rd season.

    Soulless people

Well filmed, cool location, nice casting. But the script. Geez. Tired of Rosa's self-indulgent pity party. Woe is me. Every character literally insulting every other character. Nobody helping anyone else. Everyone clinging to their own demented dreams. Everyone thinking they know best. Ugh.

    1 & 3 are awesome, not 2

The first season had me hooked. It was a decades, old mystery, combined with modern murder and disappearances. Many people were not who they seemed to be. Small towns have a lot of dark secrets. As much as season one grabbed me, season two turned me off. They decided to do the whole drug angle and blaming it on the foreigners with more big city interaction at a drug squad. This plot has been done to death on show after show after show. The Muslim culture was a part of season one but it is the focus in season two. There are all the traditional conflicts about women wearing scarves and dressing appropriately and men being traditional men. Again these topics have been done to death. Season three finally got back to what season one was. Wilder is once again investigating murder and mystery in a small, remote town. This is where the series shines. Not many people know what life is like in a remote, Swiss village, and have not traditionally seen it on the screen. Season two was so bad I actually fast forwarded through most of it so don't give up it does get better once again with season three.

    Anomalous Season 3

This was heading for a solid eight or nine stars until Season Three. I don't know if the scriptwriters changed or if the producers decided on a format reset but the one they chose, namely that we see who the baddie is at the beginning rather than being revealed at the end is a formula I particularly dislike. I really used to hate the "Colombo" detective series because of this schema. It takes part of the pleasure out of a mystery crime thriller series, to wit, being able to try to guess who the miscreant is. Fortunately things went back on track in Season Four.

I actually watched the whole lot back to back over a week. Even with the deficiencies of the third season, there was enough tension, character development and plot to hold the attention. I also liked the long episodes of fifty eight minutes.

I will say one thing about the dubbing though - it was far less professionally done in Season Four than the previous ones - I watched in Swiss German with English subtitles. My German is reasonable but Swiss is completely beyond me.

My gripes here are just niggles though. I really do recommend this series and all of its seasons.

1½ episodes in, looks promising but MHz English subtitles are a horrible translation!

I know just enough German and even a smidge of Arabic and quickly realized the flat, dumbed down dialogue seemed out of place with the rest of this production.

So I downloaded an alternative set of English subtitles and suddenly everyone seemed so much more intelligent. It seems North American distributor MHz (a division of Kino) has made custom English subtitles (copyrighted, no less) that dumbed down the dialogue as to make it intolerable.

For example, when the chief investigator walks in he isn't asked if he "wants" to take over, he's asked if he "is going to" take over. And then he doesn't reply, "No, let them continue" (where "them" makes no sense, it's "her") instead he very snidely says, "I'll let our young colleague carry on."

As they proceed, the investigators aren't jumping to conclusions as the MHz subtitles make it seem. Quite the opposite; they are carefully examining all the evidence and considering all the different scenarios. This takes longer sentences with subtle qualifiers, but MHz has really screwed this up by leaving all subtlety on the editing room floor.

To make matters worse, these pathetic subitles have been BURNED IN to the video, so even though I'm technically savvy enough to load my own subtitles it's really difficult to read them overlaid on the bad translation. Aaaargh!

Hopefully I can find a copy of this without any subtitles so I can read the better ones, but I haven't even found a European DVD/Blue-Ray.

MHz, if you're listening: Just download the subtitles available for free on the internet, because whoever you paid for these did a horrible job. And don't burn in subtitles! Multiplex them like other streaming services do so that we can turn them off or add our own.

And there are free subtitles in many languages you could offer your customers. Start with Spanish and French for your North American market, but why not add other options. Look at how Netflix does it, it isn't that hard!

Come on, this is 2025, not 2005.
