Storyline

Through its lyrical structure, Chavela will take viewers on an evocative, thought-provoking journey through the iconoclastic life of game-changing artist Chavela Vargas. Centered around never before-seen interview footage of Chavela shot 20 years before her death in 2012, and guided by the stories in Chavela's songs, and the myths and tales others have told about her - as well as those she spread about herself - the film weaves an arresting portrait of a woman who dared to dress, speak, sing, and dream her unique life into being. User Reviews

A riveting and passionate homage to Chavela
24 April 2017 | by qbakSee all my reviews

I had the honor of watching this documentary at the Minneapolis St Paul International film festival. It is a wonderful montage of interviews, images, songs and videos of an artist so human in her vulnerability and yet so celestial in the life that she lived that making an objectively and truthful documentary just seems like an impossible feat and yet Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi breaks all the complexity down for the viewer to capture the essence of this musical deity.

This documentary will leave a mark on you.
