Len Wiseman Tapped to Direct Female-Led John Wick Spin-Off Entitled Ballerina

Director, writer, and producer Len Wiseman has been hired to direct a female-led action flick that will be a spin-off of the John Wick films, entitled Ballerina. According to Deadline, the story will follow a “young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.”

While the character Ballerina was featured in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, and was played by Unity Phelan, there is no word currently as to who will play the character in the upcoming movie, or whether Keanu Reeves’s Wick will be involved. We will keep you posted as to casting and timeline updates. I think it will be pretty awesome to have another story set inside the world of the badass John Wick. Are you interested in this storyline?

Ballerina: John Wick Spinoff Taps Len Wiseman To Direct

Kirsten Howard Oct 9, 2019

The female-focused spinoff to the John Wick franchise is moving forward at Lionsgate.

Len Wiseman is coming back to movies after a seven year break from the big screen. His last film was 2012's Total Recall remake with Colin Farrell, and since then he's directed episodes of Swamp Thing, Sleepy Hollow and The Gifted, among others. Now, it's been announced that he will helm Lionsgate's John Wick spinoff film, Ballerina.

Per Deadline Ballerina "focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family" and so presumably we'll be delving into the life of one of Angelica Houston's brutalized protégés from John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum. This will be a female character-driven project written by Shay Hatten, who co-wrote Parabellum and Zack Snyder's Netflix movie, Army Of The Dead.

There is currently no official lead actress attached to the film.

John Wick Spin-Off Ballerina on Fast Track, Gets Underworld Director

  • MovieWeb
Lionsgate is getting ready to expand the John Wick franchise with its first ever spin-off. Ballerina has been put on the fast track by the studio and has locked down director Len Wiseman to helm the project. This move comes hot on the heels of this summer's John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, which proved to be a huge hit for the studio, and one it sorely needed. So they're going with the hot hand and not wasting any time when it comes to keeping this train moving down the tracks.

According to a new report, Len Wiseman will direct Ballerina, working from a script by Shay Hatten. This isn't the first we've heard of the project. Lionsgate initially won Hatten's screenplay in a bidding war back in 2017, with the hope being that they could transform into something that would fit within the John Wick universe, and that's exactly what they've done.

Len Wiseman Set To Direct Female-Centric ‘John Wick’ Spinoff ‘Ballerina’

Ballerina focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. The picture is on a fast track, with a script by Shay Hatten, whose credits include the Zack Snyder-directed Army of the Dead for Netflix, and John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.

The picture is produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, with Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski also involved in producing roles. The character was glimpsed in the last John Wick film and it isn’t clear at this point whether Reeves will be in the film though if he does it will be a cameo. Unity Phelan is in the credits of Parabellum under the character Ballerina, but I am not sure who will be the star of the spinoff.

Longer Movies Get Better Reviews Claims Rotten Tomatoes Study

  • MovieWeb
Rotten Tomatoes has concluded that movies longer than 140 minutes have a better chance of earning a Fresh Rating. The popular review site crunched the numbers of 1,431 movies released since 2019 to come to their conclusion. In addition to the amount of movies, the site only looked at features that opened up to 500 theaters or more. As the study shows, some of the shorter movies really don't even compare to the ones with the mammoth runtimes, like Andres Muschietti's It Chapter Two, which is now in theaters.

First in Rotten Tomatoes study comes the movies that fall 100 minutes and under. The site finds that these movies are more likely to be considered Rotten by their system. 380 movies are in this category with average rating of 46%. Out of the 380 movies, 128 (34%) of them were given Fresh Ratings. Some of the Fresh movies included in this tier include Lady Bird, Eighth Grade, and Green Room,

Don't Let Go Will Close Out Brutal Summer Box Office on a Quiet Note

For any studio not named Disney, it's been a pretty brutal summer at the box office. While there have been a few bright spots here and there, for the most part, this has not been the season that many had hoped it perhaps could have been, from a financial standpoint anyway. With Labor Day weekend on the horizon, it more or less signals the end of the summer moviegoing season and the beginning of fall. And it's going to be an abysmal send-off, as the only wide release is Blumhouse's Don't Let Go, which isn't exactly going to break the bank.

Don't Let Go is being released by Blumhouse Tilt and the movie boasts a solid cast led by Oscar-nominee David Oyelowo and up-and-comer Storm Reid. The sci-fi-tinged crime thriller was written and directed by Jacob Estes. While the trailers have painted this as an intriguing whodunit with a twist,

'Angel Has Fallen' Rises to Weekend #1 as 'Hobbs & Shaw' Delivers in China Bow

'Angel Has Fallen' Rises to Weekend #1 as 'Hobbs & Shaw' Delivers in China Bow
Lionsgate and Millennium's Angel Has Fallen outperformed expectations with a strong #1 debut, nearly matching its predecessor and giving Lionsgate its second #1 film of the year after John Wick 3. Also over-performing was Sony and Affirm's Overcomer while Universal's Hobbs & Shaw debuted in China with the largest August opening ever in the market. With an estimated $21.25 million, Lionsgate and Millennium's Angel Has Fallen topped the weekend box office, delivering a debut just shy of the $21.6 million opening for the previous installment in the Fallen franchise, London Has Fallen. To that point, while the film's opening weekend is the smallest in the franchise, it is the first to debut at #1 after both of the previous installments landed in the runner-up position, opening against major animated titles over their respective weekends. Angel had no such competition, debuting in the latter portion of August where box office performances are typically lighter. Looking ahead,

Toy Story 4 Locks Away Annabelle with $57.9M Second Weekend Box Office Win
Annabelle Comes Home was no match for Toy Story 4 at this weekend's box office. Disney and Pixar's sequel was able to take in $57.9 million in its second weekend in theaters, which brings the worldwide total to a massive $360.5 million. Though the sequel did not do as well as initially estimated, it has been able to secure some big numbers overseas.

As for Annabelle Comes Home, it was never expected to beat Toy Story 4 in its box office debut. It took the second position with a solid $20.3 million. Reception has been mixed for the horror sequel.

Yesterday was able to secure the third spot with $17 million. The movie is about a man who wakes up in a world where the Beatles never existed, so he takes their songs as his own. The debut is also Danny Boyle's highest to date. Disney's Aladdin remake took number four this weekend after bringing in $9.3 million.

‘MiB’ Is DOA As ‘International’ Can’t Revive Franchise & ‘Dark Phoenix’ Posts Brutal Second-Weekend Drop [Box Office]
Outside of a few exceptions, the 2019 summer box office is getting off to a really slow start. Sure, you have films like ‘John Wick 3’ and “Aladdin” doing good business, but for the most part, we’ve seen disappointing debut after disappointing debut. And this weekend was no different, as “Men in Black: International” and “Shaft” underperform.

The fourth film in the ‘Men in Black’ franchise, ‘International’ failed to re-energize the series, as it appears that not even the combined talents of Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, and Emma Thompson could get people to check it out.

Disney's 'Aladdin' Soars Over Memorial Day Weekend at the Box Office

Disney's 'Aladdin' Soars Over Memorial Day Weekend at the Box Office
Disney's Aladdin topped the weekend with an impressive debut, delivering over $85 million for the three-day and is expected to top $100 million for the four-day, Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, fellow newcomers Brightburn and Booksmart finished more in line with studio expectations than Mojo's aggressive pre-weekend forecast and Avengers: Endgame will become only the second film ever to top $800 million at the domestic box office by the end of the long holiday weekend.

With an estimated $86.1 million, Disney's Aladdin topped the Memorial Day three-day weekend box office. For Disney this is something of a big win considering the studio's live action properties, outside of the Marvel Universe, have struggled for some time now.

Disney anticipates the reportedly $180+ million production will top $105 million for the four-day weekend, though rival studios expect that total to go even higher, targeting a four-day debut over $110 million, which would be enough to make it
