Utterly captivating...utterly mesmerising...
27 October 2018 | by uppitydiggerSee all my reviews

Pretty much the perfect film. Utterly captivating...utterly mesmerising... transcendent and consciousness elevating.

It's a film that is impossible to compare with anything else I have seen to date. And I consider myself a cinephile. I thought I saw echoes of other influences... but that may have been my mind playing tricks with me.

Such tricks this film will trigger, so be warned.

Savage is a unique voice in the independent cinematic wilderness. He has been thus for most of his adult life and at least a portion of his youth, as I understand it.

The master will do his work.

But kudos must go also to the cast...who sell a mythology that in lesser hands? Might have fallen short. Capturing and distilling to it's essence the true horror of humanity debased is a genuine tightrope walk. But the film succeeds on it's own terms- serves NO other master but the one true god of this universe...M. Savage.

Also particularly striking is the magnificent score by Glen Gabriel. Arguably... the Archangel Gabriel. If you can see this film in a decent theatre...with the correct sound configuration, as I believe I did...the results are stunning. You will find the soundtrack impossible to ignore. But it is not intrusive so much as it pulls you away momentarily...plays with you like a cat playing with a mouse- not more than a few seconds- then tosses you back into the drama to fend for yourself as best you can. All things being equal...you should be transported the remainder of the narrative line with all the various disparate elements coming together in a single magical mystifying thread...all leading to an inexorable and utterly terrifying conclusion thanks to a crackling script, dazzling cinematography, lean pacing, impressive locations and production design- not to mention stunning creature and special effects.

So many plates to juggle here...only in the case of this- I hesitate to call it a 'trick'- none of those plates come crashing to the ground. For me...they are indeed still spinning. If you love the genre of...shall we call it horror? Or might we more accurately call it art? You will enjoy this so much...you won't need to worry about such trivial matters while viewing it. You'll have plenty of time to turn your mind to categories, pigeonholes & the like- should you dare- as the work dances in your brain for the next few days, weeks, and maybe even months afterward.

Yes...this piece resonates. It will continue to lead you down the rabbit hole of your subconscious mind if you let it- long after viewing. If you like...you might call it a 'tour de force'. But it's an easy lay to use French words to try to impress people. Tour de Force...Tour de France...zut alors!! Let's just call this film what it is in plain English; a breathtaking 100 minutes in the theatre.

If you like yourself...then give yourself a treat. See this film. And count yourself lucky it is still possible to see such work when Caped crusaders & frat boys rule the cinematic landscape. These are the TRUE Avengers...or should i say, Revengers.

A Revengers Tragedy. In all it's dark glory.

So suck it up...go the distance...prepare to be hypnotised...traumatised...& then finally, liberated. & thank your lucky stars for the gift of enlightenment. Because this film knows...in order to go to heaven, you must first go through hell.

& by the time the film is done with you...so will YOU.
