In 1862, pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) teams up with daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Rennes (Felicity Jones) to advance human knowledge of the weather and fly higher than anyone in history. While their voyage to the very edge of existence helps the unlikely pair find their place in the world, they face physical and emotional challenges in the thin air, as the ascent becomes a fight for survival.
Tom Courtenay is an inspired choice to play the father of Eddie Redmayne. In the 1960's, Tom was an offbeat, tall and lanky leading actor with an interesting and intense facial structure and expressions, who could also be a character-actor (or part of an ensemble), even in leading parts, much like Redmayne: both always bringing something unique to every role. If you want to watch a movie about the true events that "inspired" this movie, then go watch a documentary. If you want to watch a decent, family-friendly, period piece, with an interesting plot, then you may find this movie entertaining as I did.
I had no prior knowledge of the true events this movie is based on, but watching it piqued my interest to learn more.
