Watch ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek Get a Standing Ovation at the NHL Awards (Videos)
Alex Trebek brought the audience to their feet — and Jon Hamm almost to tears — when he took to the stage at the 2019 NHL Awards on Wednesday night.

The annual event honoring the league’s best regular-season performances was one of the “Jeopardy!” host and longtime hockey fan’s few public appearances since announcing his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

“Thank you Jon, thank you Las Vegas, and thanks to the hockey world for all your support. Growing up in Canada, you realize very early on that hockey is in your DNA,” the Ontario native said, as he recalled how his favorite player of all time, Gordie Howe, had once won the Hart Memorial Trophy.

Trebek, 78, went on to present this year’s trophy for the league Mvp to Tampa Bay Lightening right winger Nikita Kucherov.

Beijing Culture’s Song Ge Urges Mainstream Directors to Toe Government Line

  • Variety
The publicity-shy chief of Beijing Culture, which has backed such Chinese mega-hits as “Wolf Warrior II” and “The Wandering Earth,” openly urged film directors Monday to stick to material pleasing to the Chinese state, for the sake of their investors.

“If you’re shooting an art house or smaller budget films, it’s no problem — say what you want to say and shoot what you want to shoot,” Beijing Culture chairman Song Ge said at his company’s first-ever press conference, held at the Shanghai Intl. Film Festival. “But once you’re shooting with investors’ money, given the societal circumstances we have today, you should shoot films that reflect mainstream values.”

He defined those values as “things that the state allows you to shoot – things that the average people are used to seeing, that stabilize society.” Echoing the Communist Party line, he declared that “this is the place of commercial films.

Peak TV Means Boom for Soundstages in Commuter Communities

  • Variety
It wasn’t so long ago that the mention of “runaway productions” would send the California below-the-line community into a panic. But in this era of peak TV and the demand for more and more content, California’s attractive rebates have lured producers back from other states. They have created a booking boom not only in the traditional backlots of Hollywood but also in the more far-flung studios and soundstages around Los Angeles County, as well as across the state.

The California Film Commission, which runs the Film & Television Tax Credit Program 2.0, administers $330 million per year to qualified TV and film projects. Last year, then-Gov. Jerry Brown extended the program until 2025. Eve Honthaner, deputy director of the California Film Commission, notes that “production is occurring in areas across the state with help from the tax credit program’s uplift for filming outside the L.A. 30-mile zone.” Some of these

Network TV Fall 2019 Diversity Overview: CBS Steps Up as Fox Slips

Network TV Fall 2019 Diversity Overview: CBS Steps Up as Fox Slips
At the Upfronts earlier this month, a spate of freshman and sophomore series led by actors of color that were initially greenlit seemingly in order to address broadcast TV’s representation problem were canceled, including “The Passage,” “The Fix” and “Happy Together.” This caused some initial concern that networks may not be as enthusiastic about ongoing attempts at diversity, but as Fall 2019 new series orders were unveiled, the picture proved to be more assuring.

As broadcast TV networks set their 2019-2020 programming lineups, diversity concerns still very much remain at the fore, as Hollywood overall continues to be under pressure to address its historical erasure of characters of color in front of and behind the camera. TV continues to outpace film in both regards, with recent improvement on how voices and stories from all walks of life are embraced within the space.

The good news is that, on all five

Dominik Graf: Against the Times

The InvinciblesA decade ago, Dominik Graf was Frg’s (Federal Republic of Germany) best kept secret: The nation’s one grandmaster of cinema whom the rest of the world had never heard of, or not taken proper interest in his work whenever there was a chance to. There certainly have been chances: his heist thriller Die Katze (The Cat,1988) was big enough back home for even distant observers to notice. His eccentric comedy Spieler (The Gamblers, 1990) screened in Venice’s competition, with seemingly nobody giving a shit, not even the locals—the film looked like some bizarre alien creature in those early post-Wall days when good spirits and humor were the order of the day, not subversive laughter about life’s inherent weirdness. When a dozen plus years on his melodrama Der Felsen (A Map of the Heart, 2002) got selected for the Berlinale competition, the film provoked something akin to

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Leads Sheldon Cooper-Free Finales Thursday Night

  • Deadline
CBSThe Big Bang Theory series finale sucked much of the oxygen out of Thursday night in primetime, clocking its biggest crowd in more than three years and its best demo rating since the middle of last season.

Spinoff Young Sheldon’s season ender basked in that lead-in, bagging its best overall crowd since January and matching last May’s finale in the demo.

One Big Bang farewell fond-look-back special later, a S.W.A.T. season finale sent CBS tumbling, but managed to tie that franchise’s season best.

Meanwhile, among season finales not featuring Sheldon Cooper, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy fared best, though falling 32% in the demo from its year-ago closer, which had not faced a Big Bang so-long. In fact, it did not face an original Big Bang Theory episode at all, CBS having wrapped its Thursday comedies one week earlier.
