Mass + Class = 'L'
joppanLive9 April 2019
I would have given a 9/10. Because the movie was excellent for almost 80% of it. There was class, mass and thrill. The movies like these are interesting to watch only when there is a strong villain on the other side. 'L' has it through out, except the last 20%. Felt the villain becomes a powerless puppet all of a sudden and not even a match for the giant 'L' making the climax just a mere formality. Also, the item song at the end was totally unnecessary; the 'hit group' action sequence at the climax seems more of like a video game. Overall, a mass movie worth for each penny you spent.

Mass Political Drama
akhil02724 December 2019
That's one way of describing Lucifer. Well, I'll just divide this into pros and cons. Pros: 1.Mohanlal - It's not a role with the scope for very high level acting. But he excels when it comes to dialogue delivery and simple stares and looks he gives. 2. Direction and Visuals : Prithviraj successfully created awesome visuals. Pretty good for a beginner. 3. Vivek Oberoi and Vineeth(dancer) - Vivek Oberoi has done great as the evil guy and the voice but Vineeth gives life to the character.

Cons: 1. Lag - The movie is slow paced. It would've been much better if it had more pace. 2. Item Song - That was totally unnecessary. 3. Some fight sequences - The sequence inside jail and the one in the sea. Those were unnecessary.

Watch it for a Mohanlal Show and Prithviraj's stylish making.

Anything below 10 for this is injustice!
ajith-v-m18 May 2019
Prithviraj must direct more movies, Mohanlal must never stop acting and MY GOD!, Vivel Oberoi is the best villain ever! This movie was absolutely fabulous and I'm just shocked that it has only 7.8 on IMDB?! Are you kidding me???

Right from background music, to camerawork, Direction, dialogues, story etc.., just everything is top notch!! Mohnlan yet again proves why he will remain the greatest actor in India, and ladies and gentlemen, take nothing away from Vivek Oberoi who absolutely killed it!! At one point I thought he stole the entire show! How Bollywood has more of them loser Khans and hardly any of Vivek Oberoi is beyond me.

All I can say is watch the movie and enjoy every moment. The best I've seen in a while!

More than MASS it's CLASS
nishasuperboy28 March 2019
Hats off to Prithviraj the captain of the ship for delivering a masterpiece with our own complete actor Mohanlal, an absolute entertainer which we won't get to experience much . The cast is just speechless each and everyone just nailed their characters , and all characters were relevant and showed justice to the story without compromising anything. There weren't much good songs but BGM was at it's best and went the flow . The long duration didn't give any sought of lag , it was perfect. A unique style of film making which we have experienced much . Felt Mohanlal's character could have focused and portrayed more . Vivek Oberoi and Indrajith atb their best . Won't disappoint anyone who take the ticket .

This review is all about my personal opinion and may not be applicable to all !! Hope you all will enjoy

A movie exclusively for Mohanlal fans
sg092529 March 2019
+ve : Well directed. Keeps you engrossed. Intense. Mohanlal performance keeps you hooked. L in Lucifer perfectly used even in intervaL.
  • ve : Mohanlal has only one expression throughout and always in slow motion. Would have loved to see him moving normal too. Over glorified fight scenes. Story hmmm ya it's a movie for Mohanlal fans.

Much anticipated movie of 2019. The movie gives you a real mass entertainer having some good content. The main positive part of the film is that it is directed by a fan boy. That's why he has used mohanlal in the way the fans wanted to see. The direction visuals making acting all makes you feel excellent. The real don esthappan is on an action 😘.

A good but not met my expectation movie...
thematrix33329 March 2019
This is my personal opinion, I am not an expert reviewer; Overall I liked these- Shots, Camera work, Casting, Title name, Manju and Tovino. Not met my expectation I would say are these - Bgm (nothing new, very rock n rolly could ve done much much better - same like pulimurugan bgm too noicy), songs, story, dialogs and Overkilled slow motions. I would have liked to see- a more pace n story telling, more punch dialogs, more easy going mohanlal, zayed played by someone else and very specifically bgm by yakzan and neha team or by gopi s. But overall a one time watchable. I am waiting for next Pritvi directed movie.

Lucifer would feel some times good and lagging in other
safarsha29 March 2019
If u r a mohanal fan u will be satisfied bcoz the movie has many mass scenes . But as a average viewer in the first half and in the begging u feel the plot little dragging . often u feel many scenes should have been left and focused on the main story . the climax too could have been better . Still the movie offer a good experience with the visuals and bgm. Must watch for a mohanlal fan

Finally, a good commercial movie from Mollywood
saru20209 February 2020
Finally, a good commercial one from Mollywood. A nice fan-made film. So many twists & turns with so many levels of detailing that's not much predictable with a good engaging screenplay. A silent gangster, current political scenarios, with so many characters played by almost prominent stars in Mollywood, makes this movie stand out. Although, I still believe that it could've been made much better by removing the masala song & unnecessary fights by the director and some good music, especially BGM. BGM/Music is the enemy of this movie, it was the worst per se, if this was rectified, this movie might have gone places, I suppose. Nevertheless, it is the best commercial movie of Mohanlal, as it seems.

Long-Review: Lucifer (4 Stars)
nairtejas1 April 2019
Mohanlal's character spends a total of at least 20 minutes walking and talking with reticence in this political crime drama that depends so much on both writer Murali Gopy's and the audience's fantasy that it stops being clever right at the initial frames, which is problematic because that's what it pretends to be. Lucifer is a form of ambitious and hedonistic filmmaking that registers a peak in spicy and high-octane products in Malayalam cinema that I cannot highly recommend it because of its gassy narrative and artificial setup.

Lucifer narrates a legendary political family's quest for a stranglehold in its party's internal polity, triggered by the untimely death of the party's benevolent leader. As is common in most political dramas in film, the leader's diverse set of offspring scramble to take charge, which sets off sirens across the state where it rains today and Deepawali is celebrated tomorrow. While Mohanlal plays the prodigal son with a sketchy past and an even more suspicious lineage claim, factors that the party as a whole are wary off, Manju Warrier, Vivek Oberoi, and Tovino Thomas make up for the rest of the orphaned family. The interactions between these bratty kids (despite some of them eligible to experience mid-life crisis or death even) as well as the superior supporting characters' play are what supplies enjoyable sequences throughout the film. Sequences that are guaranteed to help you orgasm, one after other, whether it is because of a man's show against a bunch of armed goons or sassy dialogues thrown around like you have been waiting for it. There is so much that Lucifer packs in its 3-hour-long self-indulgent almost-sexual fantasy that it can become difficult to detect the glaring issues let alone digest them.

Murali Gopy's story and its treatment is a combination of cliche and pop culture references. Where dialogues and slow-mo walking sequences present cooked chicken to a house packed of hungry wolves, it goes on to celebrate itself by giving what the audience wants. The protagonist is an influential politician under the disguise of a benevolent leader, a term that you may have read a few seconds ago in this same review. It has a serious lack of plot density which is brought about by its contrived nature where everything - EVERYTHING - happens to the wishes of the protagonist which spoils the film for most, and perhaps even moderate fans of the lead actor. It is clear from the first frame where the plot is going and that in itself is a bad mark on Lucifer which boasts of a battalion of actors playing usual characters of a film on political vendetta.

The problem with this type of screenwriting is that it does not fight the predictable nature of such stories and does not pique the interest of a discerning viewer. It converts that viewer - especially if he's a fan - into believing that this is the peak of clever films, and who refuses to accept that it is, in fact, hollow. Lucifer time and again reminds that there is nothing more to it than actual punches delivered effortlessly, punchy dialogues, and an unsurprising thread of events. Of course, I'll give it to Prithviraj for a decent work as a first-time director, managing his battalion of veteran actors with sagacity, not letting any one of them, except Mohanlal, to go beyond their boundaries. This is also why the film flows smoothly, albeit with a few abrupt scenes also involving an unwanted, preposterous addition towards the end: an item dance whose main viewer is the audience who has now a bucket of popcorn to handle. This last element confirms my doubts about the makers' intention. That it is to cash in on the singular popularity of Mohanlal and his superior ability to handle a meaty character with plenty of scales like this.

Mohanlal enters the scenes where he's certain to be the most charming person like a boss and exits with same panache, only better. I'm still wondering how he manages to pull it off, not making a single mistake either in delivery or acting even while he's surrounded by thespians who are equally daunting. Oberoi comes second in Lucifer in the cast due to his ability to flex the muscles of his wooden face, playing a character that reignites my trust in him to make a comeback to mainstream Indian cinema. The supporting performances of Sai Kumar, Tovino Thomas, Baiju, and Indrajith Sukumaran are equally satisfying, but are still overshadowed by the idea of Mohanlal's character even when he's not in a particular scene. Because Warrier is weepy and distraught throughout the film, there's nothing much for her to do in Lucifer; same goes to a lot of the supporting actors. For a moment, I even thought this was another likable stunt a la Joshiy's Twenty:20 (2008). Figure not because at least that one had humor in it.

English speaking is surprisingly very good in Lucifer, a quality that I am so happy with that I would even nominate the film as a must-watch for any Malayalam director who wants to sample the language in their films. We all know that English dialogues are cringeworthy in almost all Malayalam films, and this is where Lucifer breathes fresh air. However, the attention to such details is still not up to the mark, be it about technology involving the Interpol or something as ubiquitous as social media. Brownie points also for doing a great job in diction as well as dialogue writing.

There is a lot of back and forth dilly-dallying in Lucifer, which makes the film longer by at least 30 minutes. For a fan, these 30 minutes will be critical because that is when Mohanlal does what he does best: look outside through a window staring at the sunlight without wearing sunglasses, turn his neck to the right so that he can take a look at the person behind him with one eye, and then utter a washed-up dialogue that made him popular twenty years ago. People around me erupted in a jubilant mode of maddeningly loud cheering and I know the makers accepted it as an affirmation for maybe a second part. As a reviewer who wants to promote cinema that it true to the art form and not to the external factors like that of a film star's crowd pull and fanbase, I would not recommend Lucifer as a must-watch. But if you are a diehard fan I have nothing to say to you. TN.

Its a Mass Film
AdhilAramam7 April 2019
The style of making masks the lazy script. Though the Mass Scenes were awesome, it feels like Mohanlal didnt got much screen time in the movie, and he didnt had much dialogues He had nothing much to "act" rather than few mass numbers.

A Murali Gopy Prithviraj Mohanlal endeavour that's hit the Bulls eye!!
dishaan-222-43042929 March 2019
I have been watching movies born from scripts created by Murali Gopy (MG) since his first..Rasikan...Though couldn't appreciate Rasikan much, nevertheless, I appreciated his efforts made and now the tree has fully grown...rather blossomed into bearing fruit...that too a really sweet one! A BIG! Kudos to Murali Gopy for creating the script of Lucifer...a Malayalam movie which as envisaged delivers a visual treat after a long time ( with due respects to Pulimurugan and Odiyan)...Mohanlal at his best...the characters performing their best with a well chosen array of cast! the movie at a pace without drags or lags....credits to Prithviraj Sukumaran for his commendable work on his directorial debut...Kudos to Team Lucifer for entertaining !!!

Short review
sarathpillaijl30 March 2019
For a debut directorial, this movie is awesome. In the beggining there was a lot of lag, the narration was good but there is so much going on that you will loose interest or get confused. But it again gains pace after mohanlals intro. You will get a lot of questions pre interval which will soon be answered post interval. The direction is excellent, you will never think its from a debut director. Screenplay sometimes fails but still holds. The cast was a tremendous pros of the movie. Every role was carried out perfectly. I mean what could go wrong with that cast. Story was again, confusing most of the times. A blink of an eye and you loose most of the information that you need to understand the story. Overall a good movie

Welcome back Laletta
aiswaryapradeep2429 March 2019
After the disastrous Odiyan, lalettan is back with Lucifer . It's an awesome movie with a great storyline and direction . The casting was superb . The acting was great too . The fight sequences were very well executed.

The only thing I found funny in the film was the dance number . Rest all were great . This is a mass film and if you are a lalettan fan , then this is a must watch .

Good political-action drama!
sriramthestranger26 July 2020
Though many movies have come on the genre of politics, this movie is quite different as it deals with the funding for political parties rather than the usual theme of cleaning the corruption, serving the people, etc. Mohanlal fits T to this role and there are great whistle out moments in the film. The movie though engaging is lengthy and there are some unnecessary characters and fight scenes. A worthy watch!!

The complete actor show.
Azanspy31 March 2019
Prithviraj Sukumaran's Lucifer had huge expectations. First and important factor for that is Mohanlal is the main lead. Second, the rest of the cast and crew. The trailer was also excellent. I watched this movie two days after the release and all the reports stated that it is a masterpiece and best in recent times. Some compared it to Narasimham. After I watched the movie, I was wondering what was so extraordinary in this movie except Mohanlal's performance and the making of the movie. I am a neutral fan. Watching Mohanlal kicking some asses is good, but it is nothing extraordinary if the movie as a whole is not extraordinary. The movie is 180 minutes long and it doesn't bore often. This is a good movie showcasing the superstar power like Petta or The Great Father. Now don't get me wrong. This is not a negative review. But I have to say that from Prithviraj and the word off mouth after release, I expected a masterpiece like Drishyam or atleast Oppam. Performance wise, everyone has done a great job. Vivek Obroei did an excellent job and it is Manju Warrier's best performance after How Old Are You. The punch dialogues in some scenes were also good. Kudos to Sujith Vaasudev as it is one of the best cinematography in Malayalam films. Overall, Lucifer is a must watch for Mohanlal and the incredible making. There is nothing extraordinary except that. Lucifer will satisfy die hard Mohanlal fans but I expected more from Prithviraj.

Disappointed as a true Lalettan fan
krishmarath2 April 2019
Doing all sorts of mediocrity in the label of "Mass" have become a cancer in the Malayalam movie industry. There is a reason we love Lalettan and Mammookka. That is because they were effortlessly capable of bringing LIFE to the characters they played in the past and were not superhumans but REAL. The story could use the talents of these marvellous actors.

Do we really need this Onemanshow sort of superhuman hero to celebrate our admiration towards these wonderful actors? Unfortunately that is where it has come down to! I really believe if we could use these talent for a solid storyline, we could redefine the term "Mass" to another level.

Stories need Actors, not the other way around.
