Inspired by the novel 'Naissance de Rebecca à l'ère des tourments' by Québécoise author Marie-Claire Blais, Born in the Maelstrom is story of Rebecca, an eighteen-year-old biracial girl, who is bound in an imaginary world shaped by her black mother's painful past. The film is an impressionistic coming of age journey of Rebecca and her struggle against racism, oppression and the karmic ties that haunt the human spirit.
