After Flynn takes the plutonium core of the atom bomb, the team seems to worry, as if the slightest vibration will set off a nuclear reaction. The plutonium core in an atomic weapon is inert (sub-critical), until the pressure waves from the conventional explosives in the bomb compress the fissile material to critical density and start the nuclear reaction. Rufus Carlin: [arriving in 1962, they see a mushroom cloud in the distance] We're too late.
Lucy Preston: That's not Flynn. There's a nuclear test site about sixty miles on the other side of town.
Rufus Carlin: Who's crazy enough to test a nuclear bomb outside of Vegas?
Lucy Preston: The U.S. Department of Energy.

Almost great, but not quite!
18 October 2016 | by lbkeller-00381See all my reviews

I loved the realistic setting in the Sands hotel, and hearing the vocals of Sinatra and Martin were terrific. The costumes looked time-appropriate, as did the vehicles. There was one historical mistake. When shortly after landing near Vegas, it was stated that the atomic tests were being run by the U.S. Dept. Of Energy. The problem is that this dept. wasn't created until 1977. I love the settings of the show so far, and the concept of time travel is fascinating. In this episode, the focus on Judith Campbell was an interesting angle. The way that the writers have tackled significant historical events with the premise of the show (the inability to alter history) has been really interesting. The three main characters have been very good so far, and I look forward to future episodes.
