Storyline

Set in postwar Germany in 1946, Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal. Written by Fox Searchlight Pictures

Goofs

The book, the movie trailer, and the distributor's promotional material all set the story in 1946. However, one of the opening title cards says "Six months after the end of the war." Since Germany surrendered in May 1945, that would move the start of the story back one year to November 1945/Christmas 1945 instead of 1946. See more »

Superb acting
12 March 2019 | by tjandspallanSee all my reviews

Keira Knightley is simply outstanding in this drama about a woman torn between two men at the end of WW2. Very much in the vein of a Merchant Ivory production; might seem old-fashioned by modern standards, but there is definitely a place for this type of film, which is largely missing from current productions. An enjoyable, moving and beautiful film.
