The GATES OF SLEEP has its origin as a title in the mythological Greco Roman story of Aeneas and Dido, who escaped from the sacking of Troy and led the surviving Trojans to Italy, where they became the progenitors of Rome. When Dido commits suicide and is taken down to Hades Aeneas follows her. The God's give Aeneas eternal life and rebirth as a reward for his service and the depth of his love. He lingers by the river Styx at the gates of Hades, but he cannot enter and join Dido, for then he will be consigned to forever sleep.
