Supergirl only works when the show stays within its boundaries. 'We Can Be Heroes' spends way too much time taking itself oh so seriously, with little to no CW fun in between.
Every time Livewire is an antagonist for this show I tend to tune out. To me, she represents everything horrible about season 1. Lame look, cringe-worthy dialogue, and no depth behind the odd attire. After a nice episode last week, tonight brought us right back where we left off last season with a convoluted plot and really awful writing.
Had this episode solely focused on the martian conflict, or solely spent its time on the ridiculous 'hero problems' arc going on at the D.E.O, it could have succeeding to a more gratifying result. I never cared about James Olsen's Guardian, but I was coming around to the idea heading into the second half of this season. But to now have Kara pulling a "you're never going to be ready to be a hero" on him? Come on now CW. You're smarter and more creative than that. I have to believe this was done to create a parallel between those two and J'onn J'onzz and M'gann. The latter provided a far more intriguing storyline.
I'm not interested in seeing any more James-Kara conflict. It's silly. Just as silly as the Mon-El and Kara stuff was tonight. Their relationship has been cute thus far but come on now, that dialogue didn't even sound like they were trying. It's completely the opposite as Maggie & Alex, who have earned the right to share cheesy and heartfelt moments with each other.
So everything felt a little forced tonight. Every show has a bump in the road every so often. This was just one of those. It's unfortunate that this was the worst episode since mid-way through season 1, but you can't win them all. Where are the Luthors? And how will this White Martian story unfold? That's what I'm interested in. Not some forced friend/love triangle.
