Obnoxious and morally bankrupt
22 December 2018 | by CarsonTrentSee all my reviews

This is a stew of remixed themes found in American productions of the last half century or so. You got the cliché misunderstood and tortured hero. He joins an (assassin !? this is where it's supposed to be fresh and edgy) college. There you have all the stereotypical gangs and prejudiced, bigoted behavior depicted in American productions (I guess if you are Japanese by birth, you have to join the Yakuza, here. Just one example. You get the idea. You are only the color of your skin in this one) . In this case the kids of people affiliated with organizations such as: Yakuza, US Government, white supremacists, south American vatos or whatever.

The viewer. The teenager to young (14-21) adult obviously targeted as audience, is supposed to suspend his disbelief into buying this premise that all these social groups would send their offspring to a mixed school where they learn the trade of killing (so they skip the whole learning curve of growing up). All against the background of the 80's. Yup, this one, too is following the current trend of reviving the infamous decade. You can almost see the young actors studying the mannerisms of such actors as Jon Cryer, Rob Lowe, Sean Penn, Molly Ringwald, Charlie Sheen etc in the "classics" of the period (those were silly high-school or college comedies, but they also had moral back bones). All the archetypes are of course heavily featured. The hero, the joker, the old wise man, the mysterious girl, the arrogant jock, the good girl, the antagonist. Put in a bit of Trinity from the Matrix, Mr Miyagi, and Tyler Dyrden, 'cause it's supposed to be 80's but with a twist. Throw in some underage smoking and questionable morality. Heavy racial profiling. Some Fascist, Nazi, Killer and other "edgy" terminology. Some westernized distortion of Eastern philosophy to advocate violence and antagonistic perspective.

Mix it and you get this: An obnoxious, mildly revised version of every American high-school movie you ever saw + hate as a bonus. Ethnic hate, mostly. A "good" way to cash in on an old idea and further confuse the younger generation to join the Hikikomori or psychopaths of tomorrow. It's ok to question authority and society, but I highly doubt that these kid actors know what they are talking about, here.

They have to kill somebody who deserves to die ?! As a school assignment ? Kids have to make this decision and then act on it ?

This is stupid, irresponsible and morally bankrupt.

Next thing a teenager takes his dad's gun to his school, the media is outraged and everybody wonders why.

What is shocking is that extremist websites are being blocked, but so are certain foreign economic interests. In any given country, today. People of certain ethnic background are being refused at times entry into certain countries. But this. As long as it makes them money. They are OK with poisoning the minds of their OWN kids. THIS isn't just crap. It's way more dangerous than that. And it should carry a label of Parental Advisory, at least.

P.S.: It is OK to portray adults in any way because film is an intellectual exercise. But when you portray minors as voluntary killers and mess with their heads it begins to resemble the Nazi indoctrination films of the Third Reich shown to the under-aged Hitler Youth before being shipped to battle in suicide missions. Kids, look it up.
