The king is heavily criticized by the clergy, who refuse to billet his soldiers, and his wife for parading the pregnant Madame de Montespan at court. A particular enemy of the lady is Madame de Foix, whose son was passed over as the justice minister. Fabien, still investigating the minister's death, believes he was murdered but not by his widow, who herself succumbs to poison. Philippe's resumed sexual affair with the Chevalier is rudely interrupted when Louis orders him to marry Liselotte, princess of Palatine, to secure a German alliance against the Dutch. A lavish ball is held to welcome her at which de Montespan goes into labour, whilst in the palace grounds the royal gardener, Jacques, has a fatal encounter with a sinister stranger . Did You Know?

A tiny Madame de Montespan is shown being laced into a very tight corset to attend a ball right before giving birth. However, the real de Montespan, who was THE fashion trend-setter during her "reign" as the leading lady of Versailles, often wore gowns that were very loose and unfettered. This looseness was specifically designed to provide her easier movement during her frequent pregnancies (seven with King Louis after two with her husband, for a total of nine). By her late thirties, after her many pregnancies and due to a love of food, the real Montespan was actually quite heavy. See more »

A Still Small Voice
10 September 2018 | by Prismark10See all my reviews

The king's mistress Madame de Montespan is pregnant and her behaviour has aroused the concern of Louis's wife as well as the church.

Madame de Montespan herself knows that once she has her baby, gets a bit older her place in the king's affections will be less secure. Unfortunately she should had taken her doctor's advice and wore less tight fitting clothes to the ball.

Philippe meanwhile is back with his lover Chevalier. However Louis has ordered Phillipe to marry the princess of Palatine in order to secure the Germans as allies in his pending war against the Dutch. Phillippe returns to Versailles as a ball is thrown for him. Philippe's new wife is well aware of his lover. Despite being jolly, she gives him some barbed remarks.

Louis himself needs to have the church on his side. They are refusing to billet and feed his soldiers in french soil.

There is danger still about. Fabien comes across another poisoning and the royal gardener is stabbed by a stranger.

There is plenty of muckiness in this episode. Louis with his mistress and Phillipe with his male lover. No wonder the Bishop is upset.
