Storyline

Set in 1950s Manhattan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a 60-minute dramedy that centers on Miriam "Midge" Maisel, a sunny, energetic, sharp, Jewish girl who had her life mapped out for herself: go to college, find a husband, have kids, and throw the best Yom Kippur dinners in town. Soon enough, she finds herself exactly where she had hoped to be, living happily with her husband and two children in the Upper West Side. A woman of her time, Midge is a cheerleader wife to a man who dreams of a stand-up comedy career, but her perfect life is turned upside down when her husband suddenly leaves her for another woman. Completely unprepared, Midge is left with no choice but to reevaluate what to do with her life. When she accidentally stumbles onto the stage at a comedy club, she soon discovers her own comedic skills and decides to use this newfound talent to help her rebuild a different life for herself. The series will trace the trajectory of Midge's journey as she goes on to pursue a career ...

Trivia

Although this has not been stressed on the show to nearly the extent that it has been for the Weissmans and the Maisels (Midge included) the character of Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein) is also supposed to be understood as Jewish. In a November 2017 interview with the Jewish women's magazine Hadassah, Borstein confirmed that Susie is Jewish: "Borstein describes the Jewish Susie as very strong, wanting to be part of her own destiny and not just letting life happen to her. 'I've always known most Jewish women to be that way,' she observes." In a December 2017 interview with The Jewish Journal, Borstein said that Susie reminds her of several of her own family members: "My grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, was very funny, very dark and bitchy. My mother went back to school later in life to get her MSW or MFT psychotherapy degree, one of those f-- series of letters with a bunch of "m's" in it. They were tough broads who kept reinventing themselves, and there's a piece of Susie in there." See more »

Laughed until I cried and then told everyone to watch!
26 March 2017 | by tawniadawn-marieSee all my reviews

I really enjoyed this show! I agree with another reviewer that this world has a lot of mean people, and we all live with their nasty energy, but I happen to think that laughing helps. Also, I do not feel the main character was manipulative but charmingly "in your face". I love that she stood up for herself. I am a west coaster to my toes and have no preconceived opinions of the "jewish princess" culture but I found it to be entertaining and different from anything else on TV. I started laughing with the opening scene and enjoyed even the not- funny parts, they felt real and drew you in. Watch it, laugh and cry with the hilariously funny and slightly neurotic Mrs. Maisel!
