Cassandra Andreadis is a professional fashion photographer with a secret. A ghost has haunted her almost her entire life, and in an attempt to find peace, she is about to undertake a journey to the place where her story began. Finding herself among extended family in a strangely foreign place, Cassandra begins to see things through a different prism. Against the closed world of her own people, she witnesses the awful truth of another hidden life leaking out onto the darkened streets around her. A captivating story about a timely and hidden topic
The Veiled offers an interesting take on the male gaze filtered through the camera lens of a young woman - a fashion photographer - who at first appears to be documenting the everyday lives of beautiful women. Her lens slowly reveals a darker vision of a hidden world where women are looked at, but also enslaved. The beauty of a trafficked girl glimpsed on the street echoes that of the fashion model and her friends, but their freedom is in stark contrast to her plight.
The film asks where does romantic pursuit cross over into harassment, or even enslavement. This is a captivating story which grabs the viewer from the beginning with questions, creating suspense. Through an accomplished performance, we see the protagonist offer hope, bringing urgency to action. Propelled by her own story, she searches out what is hidden, she watches and she records.
The violence that is intrinsic to the storyline is especially effective because it is suggested and not gratuitous. The filmmaker skilfully resists exploiting the exploitation, and avoids sensationalism by not showing scenes of sexual abuse. We see the sadism of the guards, and the resulting horror of the girls' lives, through subtle scenes that haunt the viewer.
The film looks to be effortlessly directed; it is stylish but not self conscious.
