Cracking good dialog and convincing Paxton acting help this one in lift-off
4 February 2017 | by lor_See all my reviews

I see IMDb-ers don't like the many-years-after TV series spin off of that Denzel film "Training Day", but I certainly enjoyed the opener. The sharp, crisp dialog is as good as I've heard emanating from my TV set in quite a while, and hopefully this admittedly predictable procedural series will sustain the momentum generated at the outset.

Paxton delivers some great one-liners, one of which I won't spoil by listing here has quite a bit of depth, not what you expect from the cutesy jokes of a Bond film or Schwarzenegger junker. And the finale, when the heroes roles seem reversed for the future is beautifully summed up in a succinct final vocal by Paxton's slightly over-intense co-star Justin Cornwell.

So my advice to fellow hard-up boob tube addicts is to overlook the corniness, stereotyping and cop clichés endemic to this sort of network show, and revel in the expertise Paxton has amassed in three or four decades of screen acting, plus those show-stopping wisecracks -some of them actually evidencing wisdom.
