Storyline

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, the new film by Luca Guadagnino, is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. It's the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17-year-old young man, spends his days in his family's 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, who favor him with the fruits of high culture in a setting that overflows with natural delights. While Elio's sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, there is much that yet remains innocent and unformed about him, particularly about matters of the heart. One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old American college graduate student working on his... Written by Sony Pictures Classics

Trivia

Director Luca Guadagnino told Billboard's Pop Shop Podcast that he and his team of filmmakers researched which songs would have been contemporary radio hits during the summer of 1983 in Italy and the summers before, and they used that to choose a number of the songs for the soundtrack. They also considered which time of day the songs would have been played, from the radio to the discotheque. See more »

Goofs

When Elio and Oliver are at the car preparing to head off to Lake Garda with Sam, Elio has his right foot up on the open back door panel during their conversation. However, when the shot changes to Oliver's point of view in the front seat, Elio clearly has his left foot up on the door frame. Then back outside and it's right foot again. See more »

Quotes

Annella Perlman: [Reading from The Heptaméron] A handsome young knight is madly in love with a princess, and she too is in love with him, though she seems not to be entirely aware of it. Despite the friendship that blossoms between them, or perhaps because of that very friendship, the young knight finds himself so humbled and speechless that he is totally unable to bring up the subject of his love. Until one day he asks the princess point-blank: Is it better to speak or to die?
Elio: I'll never have the courage to ask...

Sensual Beauty
23 September 2017 | by See all my reviews

The most sensually immersive film you will see all year, perhaps all decade. The performances from the cast - notably Hammer, Stuhlbarg and particularly newcomer Chalamet put this film in another league from all other recent coming-of-age films and romance films. You leave this film wishing you could stay in the world it has enveloped you within.
