- AXL is a top-secret, robotic dog created by the military to help protect soldiers of the future. Code named by the Crane Systems owner Andric (Dominic Rains) who created him, AXL (Attack, Exploration, Logistics) embodies the most advanced next-generation artificial intelligence. The platform provides the efficiency and protection of a robot, with the ability to communicate and intuitively bond with its handler.
Sam (Alex MacNicoll) is Miles's (Alex Neustaedter) rival at cross country biking and is always insulting him, as Sam is rich and Miles is poor. Chuck (Thomas Jane) is Miles's father, while George (Ted McGinley) is Sam's dad. Miles had snapped his bike chain in his last race, but Sam and George refuse to share a spare chain with them, even though that had more than a couple in their inventory. Sara (Becky G) had witnessed this exchange at the racetracks. She steals a chain from George and gives it to Miles so he can continue to race. With the new chain, Miles beats Sam at the race.
Miles finds that Sara is going home with Sam. Sam invites Miles to a party later that night. Miles finds that Sara's mother is the housekeeper at Sam's place and she is not Sam's girlfriend. Miles checks out Sam's place and believes that with that quality of equipment, he could be winning every race out there. Miles gets a harsh lesson in life being unfair.
Sam invites Miles to a private track the next day and his cronies mix sugar in his gas tank, when Miles was talking to Sam. Miles's bike shuts down in the middle of a stunt, and Miles has a bad fall to the bottom. Scroggins (Niko Guardado) is Sam's adventure cameraman. He refuses to leave Miles while he is injured. Sam abandons Miles by leaving him some fuel and his bag.
An experiment at Crane Systems goes wrong and AXL escapes into the real world. AXL is discovered hiding alone and damaged in the desert by Mile. Miles was hiking his way back home after being abandoned by Sam when he finds AXL. AXL attacks Miles, but Miles manages to escape on his bike. But he returns when he finds AXL badly damaged and tries to fix it. AXL sends Miles the repair instructions on his mobile. AXL works on normal motor fuel. Meanwhile Sara realizes what Sam did to Miles and goes to look for him. Sara finds Miles in the desert along with AXL. AXL befriends Miles after being identified by Miles as an ally. Miles teams up with a smart, resourceful Sara Reyes to protect his new best friend.
Meanwhile, Andric launches drones to track AXL down. He keeps the whole activity away from company servers as he doesn't want the military to find out about this. The military is funding the project and might pull the funding if they realize that the system still has major bugs in it. Andric has already spent $70 million of the military's money and his demo is in 2 days. Andric locates AXL, but finds that it is with Miles, Andric realizes that Miles is the perfect human test subject for AXL and decides to activate testing protocols to see how AXL performs bonding with a human.
Miles decides to take AXL to an abandoned rune to keep him safe. Sam activates the "Find your IPhone" feature for Sara's mother and helps her track Sara, as she had not been home for a few hours. That's how he finds the location of the rune. AXL accesses his own memory banks to play a video on Craine systems and his purpose. Miles learns to connect with AXL after activating his owner-pairing technology, after watching the video. The pairing technology is controlled by a remote, which Miles hides at his home. Helping Miles gain the confidence he's been lacking, AXL will go to any length to protect his new companion, including facing off against the scientists who created him and who will do anything to get him back. Sam arrives at the rune and confronts Sara. With AXL, Miles attacks Sam and humiliates him, while forcing him to retreat. A-X-L attacks Sam and Miles uses the situation to threaten him, telling him to leave Sara alone. Sara is angry that Miles has inflamed an already bad situation, but says she will not leave Miles. Miles orders AXL not to hurt Sam.
Randall (Lou Taylor Pucci) is a scientist at Craine systems and wants to bring in AXL before he hurts a civilian. But Andric is adamant that the real-life data puts them 5 years ahead in the development cycle, and a civilian casualty is collateral damage.
Miles and Sara go back to Miles' home (leaving AXL somewhere in an old rune), and tell his father, Chuck, about AXL, but Chuck tells them to return AXL to its owners. At the same time, Sam returns with his crew and burns AXL with his flamethrower. AXL does not retaliate as he was under orders from Miles not to hurt Sam. Sara records a video on her camera phone and Miles and Sara both take off to save AXL but are too late.
However, AXL gives them a location to go to repair him. Meanwhile, a man sent by Andric shows up at the house and demands that Chuck reveal the location of the devices that control AXL. Chuck, growing suspicious, manages to trick the man, and demands him to answer his questions. The Agent reveals he is looking for AXL. Andric is fascinated by the progress AXL has made with Miles and wants to bring it back home. Andric is under tremendous pressure to deliver a working prototype to the military.
Miles and Sara take AXL to a garage for repairs, and it automatically repairs itself for 2.5 hours. However, Andric gets a log on its location and sends his team to retrieve it. The Agents arrive and try to retrieve AXL while it's still repairing. The repairs finish just in time, and A-X-L subdues the operatives. When it comes online, it remembers its last memories of Sam burning him with a flamethrower. AXL runs out to go and kill Sam, with Miles and Sara rushing to stop it.
Sam and his friends are throwing a party when AXL arrives to get revenge. Sam tries again to burn him with a flamethrower until the fuel runs out, but Miles and Sara arrive and convince AXL not to kill Sam. Drones arrive and disable AXL. Miles and Sara are captured and brought to Andric, and he tries to override Miles' control of AXL, but fails.
When Miles refuses to tell him where the remote is (to override AXL's owner-pair bond), Andric programs AXL to attack Sara, if he doesn't tell him where the remote is. Sara is able to convince AXL not to attack her by showing the feather that she drew earlier. Captain Webber (Marie-Francoise Theodore), Andric's military superior, shows up. Andric tries to escape, but is arrested. Andric realizes that Berman (a scientist working for Andric, who thinks Andric's methods are unethical) contacted Webber and reported him.
Knowing they are surrounded, Sara allows herself to be captured, while Miles and AXL escape, but they are pursued by a helicopter. They ride up a mountain until they fall, knowing Miles can't keep him, he orders AXL to run. AXL obeys and then starts a self-destruct sequence. AXL uploads to the Internet all the memories he, Miles and Sara had together. Having finished, AXL looks at Miles' image for the last time, before finishing the self-destruct sequence. Miles then allows himself to be captured by the military.
6 weeks later, Andric is imprisoned for violating national security and endangering the lives of civilians. He is visited by Webber who informs him that AXL's code has resurfaced and wants to know what it is doing.
Sara and Miles have gone off to college via the scholarships provided by the military, to buy their silence and to keep an eye on them. Meanwhile, Sara and Miles spend the day at the beach hanging out, studying, and playing with their new puppy, when Sara gives him an envelope. Miles opens it and puts out a short note from his dad. Miles reads it then flips the envelope upside down and the remote to AXL falls out into his hand. Miles asks Sara if he should try and activate it. The pairing device does work, and the A.X.L. OS is uploading itself back on their phones. They realize that AXL is alive, survived somehow, and might be returning to them.
