Needs improvement
18 April 2017 | by michaelrthomsonSee all my reviews

A little like writing a school report after the first week, it's fair to say to potential hasn't been realised in week one, and it certainly needs to improve to have any hope of captivating or sustaining viewers.

The White Queen was OK, it had some talented actors onboard which sure helped that rather mediocre writing, alas, the same seemingly cannot be said for this latest incarnation of Philippa Gregories book turned TV Show. It was much lamented how historically inaccurate the White Queen was, and anyone who knew anything of actual (or at least the contemporary written) history was quite vocal about the flaw in both the book and it's TV adaptation. I noticed on this one in large bold font that 'this may vary from historical fact' - well done for stating the obvious there, I suppose as a watcher one isn't expecting a documentary, but some degree of truth would have been nice. Thus far, it doesn't seem to be entirely sticking to the written story either, or it is at least taking some liberties with conjectured tales of old rather than going with what it actually written down.

I digress. So far, one episode in and my view is the acting is pretty much terrible, there isn't a single actor in this I've ever hear of, which isn't to say they aren't in other shows obviously, but there are certainly no reasonable well known folks here to support what is a pretty badly written screenplay adaptation. As another reviewer mentions, The White Queen did at least seem to have a budget, unlike this which appears to spend most of it's time shooting in the same garden, the same corridor or the same cloister. The actor playing Elizabeth is at best average, the actor playing her mother is even more average, and the actor playing Margaret Beaufort is just ghastly - she has all the dynamism of a wet rag - did they try at all to get the actors back from The White Queen - that may have mad more sense, after all, Elizabeth Woodville is stuck in my head as Ms Ferguson, likewise the actor who played Margaret Beaufort.

Accepting it's one episode in, I will no doubt watch the second with high hopes for improvement, that the writers may find some talent, and the actors may show some real depth of character and of the times they are portraying, but most of all, I hope they explore beyond the confines of these four same old walls.
