I watched the original movie just 2 years ago and thought it was very decent for a teen romance. The characters were cute and the songs were so catchy I can still remember some of them.
I went to the sequel without any feelings of nostalgia attached to the previous movie, but still very excited to see the conclusion of this love story. I could finally watch this movie now with the release of english subtitles.
The first minutes set the tone of the movie as we get to know what happened to Rangga and Cinta since he left her. They are adults now and the script is more mature as well, while never betraying the spirit of the original. This is a slow movie but I just loved how it took its time to build the tension between Rangga and Cinta with the actors doing an amazing job at portraying these characters' emotions. The songs are beautiful and the lyrics can get very emotional as they convey the feelings of these characters in each scene.
This sequel is neither superior or inferior to the original, but a great companion to it and a conclusion to the story in a very satisfying note. I can't think of any other sequel for a teen romance beeing made 14 years later using the same actors to end the story. These movies are not popular outside Indonesia, even among asian cinema lovers, but I honestly think there's something very special here.
The fact that this movie takes place in Yogyakarta was a plus for me well as I've been there before with my girlfriend (she's also indonesian).
