Denish D'Souza mentioned that no republican owned slaves. This is not entirely true. Some republicans did own slaves before they joined the party, e.g. Francis Preston Blair who was first a democrat and owned slaves until the 1850s but became a member of the party in 1854 when he started helping organizing the Republican party. Also Alabama's governor William Hugh Smith owned slaves but changed it when he became a republican in the 1860s. See more
Why were blacks such a threat to the Democratic party?
Blacks were the majority in several southern states. They were able to send numerous people to the states' legislatures. They had 22 members elected to Congress. So this was a nightmare for the Democrats because all of sudden, they were being ruled by black Republicans and they reacted with brutality. The party had its own war machine and its target were blacks and white Republicans.
The opening credits contain the lines "This is a true story. No names were changed to protect the democratic party." See more
