Daniel Ross Owens,
Human traffickers wipe out a young girl's family and village. She then seeks revenge on those responsible, eventually becoming first the hunted then turning into the hunters with the mercenary hired to eliminate her.
I was lucky to catch this at the Indie Memphis Festival, where it won the audience award, and haven't been able to get it out of my brain since. The story is simple; a young woman who works at a pet store dreams of receiving a small inheritance when she turns thirty, but when that day comes her wealthy, estranged dad tells her she's cut off. What sticks with you about this movie is the rich, nuanced performances (the cast is truly stunning), as well as the great writing. This is a tragic story, but also a very funny one, filled with all-too-human characters who get in way over their heads. It's the kind of movie you wish studios were still helping get into the world. 9/10.
