MPAA Rated R for pervasive language, sexual content, drug and alcohol use, some violent behavior/disturbing images - all involving minors

Sex & Nudity

  • A mother's sex life is discussed as well, and there are probably some sexual references.
  • The sexual encounter may involve some brief nudity, but discussed in detail as well.
  • The fact that the kids' youth are very young makes it more disturbing; especially being that they would want to have sexual situations/encounters with others.
  • Some cleavage of girls possibly and maybe a few shirtless men/youth boys.
  • A teen at a skateshop said he would rape his parents.

Violence & Gore

  • A car accident scene is shown, very serious and may be a little disturbing for kids to watch.
  • Several instances of fighting, involving punching and other struggles are shown. A scene of brutal bullying by Stevie's older brother who beats him up. They get into a fight.
  • As usual, several skateboarders may take violent plunges when doing a stunt, including one who takes an intense, violent fall off a roof.
  • Characters are hurt and bullied in various ways, but the scenes are not too graphic or disturbing. (both could be bullying or a skateboard/other accidents)

  • 171 uses of "fuck", plus "dick" "pussy" "ass", "bitches", "shit", "damn", "hell", and many more. However, all are used very accurately for the time period.
  • Several homophobic and gay/racial slurs are used in a racist manner towards others, but sometimes also used for fun.
  • The teens challenge others using frequent usage of profanity.
  • Constant, pervasive use of strong language and sexual references.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several teens occasionally drink and smoke to look cool, and also to present an accurate and realistic depiction of the situations people encountered in these days.
  • Lots of drunkenness and under-the-influence of marijuana situations; overall, it is very accurate and realistic.
  • Prescription pills are used once recreationally by a few characters.
  • There really isn't alot of drug use. Maybe here and there. But there just smoking. They drink somtimes to. Its not that bad.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Everything is made to look realistic and depicted accurately for the time.
  • The brutal bullying scenes may be very disturbing to watch as Stevie is mercilessly beaten by his older brother.
  • The presentation of the multiple delinquent behavior situations could be VERY VERY unsettling to people exposed to this content and who may not be very comfortable with it.
  • Kids swearing and drinking at parties could be intense and upsetting to viewers who may not like those messages in movies like this.
  • Mid90's is a very edgy film.
  • In a brief, but visceral scene, the main character attempts suicide by choking himself with video game player cords.
