MPAA Rated R for disturbing and violent content, some bloody images, language, nudity and drug use.

Sex & Nudity

  • A woman is seen lying naked on a bed early on in the film. No sensitive parts shown, as she is on her side, with blankets in place. A man gets up, and his buttocks are glimpsed. Later she seen through a doorway, still appearing asleep, laying in her side with nothing shown. The two had presumably been intimate, but no actual sex is shown in this or any other scene in the film.
  • The "woman" in room 237 (partially decomposed form) is seen in a few scenes with frontal nudity however it looks like a costume and you cannot see any detail at all- Entirely non-sexual in context
  • Moderate nudity but it looks like a costume with no detail - and no actual sexual material in the movie

Violence & Gore

  • Several scenes of brief but graphic violence, many involving children.
  • More graphic than the shining

  • Fairly infrequent. 7 to 9 uses of "fuck", some uses each of "hell", "damn", "bastard", "bitch" and "shit."
  • Moderate bad language for an R rated horror film

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The main character is an alcoholic. You see him drink a few times in the beginning, but he later tries to hold back.
  • Early on, a woman is seen snorting cocaine and in a later scene a man says he thinks the woman stole his money to buy it

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The character of rose the hat is very disturbing because she shows no mercy and sees no wrong in hurting children
  • The antagonists kill children who shine and use their shine to stay young this can be disturbing to some
  • There two scenes recreated from the shining, one being the elevator of blood and the other being jack torrance running down a hallway with an axe. These may scare some

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A young boy is kidnapped by a group of men and women. When he awakes the group hold him down and begin brutally torturing him. He screams and cries as the group inhale his "Shine". We see blood on his face and later his corpse is buried. Probably the most intense and graphic scene in the film.
  • A man approaches a girl in a movie theater. It is implied that the girl is underage and the man is much older. They sit together and watch the movie. The girl uses telepathy to force the man to fall asleep. After he passes out the girl carves two slashes into his face.
  • A woman has her hand trapped violently in a filing cabinet. When she tries to pull her hand away the skin tears off the back. Brief but graphic.
  • A telepathic girl forces a man to shoot himself in the head with a rifle. Blood is seen. Brief but graphic.
  • A girl is shot multiple times with a rifle. Her bloody wounds are shown in detail.
  • A man is stabbed in the chest off-screen. We see his dead body on the floor in a pool of his own blood.
  • A woman stabs a man in the leg with an axe. He falls down the stairs and the woman pushes her finger into the wound causing him to scream in pain.
  • Several men and women are shot with rifles and the wounds are shown. They then scream and writhe before dying by turning into clouds of smoke.
  • A telekinetic girl causes a man to crash his car. The impact causes the man to fall through the windshield and into a tree. The man writhes in pain before dying as the girl looks on.
  • A man swings an axe at a woman, which cuts through the first several inches of her shoulder. She is unfazed, and violently throws the man down a staircase.
  • In a particularly disturbing scene, a group of adults takes a knife to a pre or early adolescent boy's body, after he is begging to not be hurt, with the "steam" generated by his suffering acting as a life force for members of this cult to procure. We see blood, but the actual cutting appears to be only glimpsed peripherally on the screen. His body is later being exhumed (only the face, shoe and baseball glove seen), with reference to the stench during the process.
  • A man bashes a mans face with a pool table ball causing big amounts of blood to fly out of the victims mouth

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A lot of disturbing imagery occur throughout. The scene where a child is brutally murdered is especially upsetting.
  • A young girl is kidnapped by a cult and it is implied that she is murdered (death is shown off screen but the kidnapping is disturbing)
  • The main antagonist is a sadistic psychic succubus who kidnaps, tortures and eventually murders children with telepathic abilities. Many scenes of violence towards children is shown and implied and this forms the overall narrative arc.
  • When the antagonists die, they "cycle out" and gradually turn into zombie-like corpses before disappearing into clouds of smoke.
  • At the end of the film, the main character goes insane and burns down the hotel. This may scare some as he chases the child he was protecting with an axe.
  • A young boy is captured by the villains and is stabbed repeatedly while they consume his "Shine" powers. The whole time he is crying and begging for his life, and his body is later found buried in a shallow grave. Probably the most disturbing and upsetting scene in the film.
