Storyline

From the proverbial wrong side of the tracks in Portland, Oregon, former competitive figure skater Tonya Harding was never fully accepted in the figure skating community for not inherently being the image of grace, breeding and privilege that the community wanted to portray, despite she being naturally gifted in the sport athletically. Despite ultimately garnering some success in figure skating being national champion, a world championship medalist, an Olympian, and being the first American woman to complete a Triple Axel in competition, she is arguably best known for her association to "the incident": the leg bashing on January 6, 1994 of her competitor, Nancy Kerrigan, who, unlike Tonya, was everything that the figure skating community wanted in their representatives. Her association to that incident led to Tonya being banned from competitive figure skating for life. Tonya's story from the beginning of her figure skating life at age four to the aftermath of the incident is presented... Written by Huggo

Trivia

Steven Rogers never had experience interviewing a real-life subject before the film. He initially called Tonya Harding's agent to obtain the life rights to her story and got a Motel 6. When he finally tracked her down, he found her extremely forthcoming over a two-day interview. Harding did not feel like she had anything to lose at that point. See more »

Goofs

Near the end of the film, while Jeff is explaining how the media so quickly moved on from his story to the next new item in the news cycle, the new van parked in front of his home is a newer model Ford E-Series van than what was used at the time. While that body style of E-Series was in production at the time, lights and wheels of the van signify it as being from at least 2001 or later. Also, the equipment mounted on the van is not what would be common for that time. See more »

Quotes

LaVona Golden: I can see that shiner through that make up, you know.
Tonya Harding: I fell on the ice yesterday.
LaVona Golden: I don't know, Tonnie. I would never be with someone who would fucking hit me.
Tonya Harding: You hit Dad.
LaVona Golden: That's different.
Tonya Harding: Anyway he said he was sorry.
LaVona Golden: You're a dumb piece of shit who thinks she deserves to get hit.
Tonya Harding: I wonder how I got that idea?
LaVona Golden: Maybe he should hit you. Maybe you'd learn to keep your big mouth shut. Sure helps me out.

Dialog and acting had the entire theater hushed.
5 January 2018 | by See all my reviews

I must have been at a different movie than those who did not like it. The story is well written, the acting was excellent and the twist in the way the story is delivered makes for a memorable event. At certain points when Tonya speaks to the audience she speaks right to you. A great story to get lost in and I was not really interested in seeing this when I went into the theater.
