- Fed up with the lack of critical appreciation despite being a successful writer of horror based soft porn (Chudail Ki Choli, Dracula's Lover, Driver Saahiba etc), Abhimanyu "Abhi" Roy (Ayushmann Khurrana) returns to his roots in Kolkata. The critics pan his books saying that all his characters are like him, negative, angry and horny and there is no goodness in the world in his stories. Women are described as heartless witches. His latest book Chudail Ki Choli has broken the 10-year sales record of the Hindi-English dictionary.
Abhi has hit a creative block and is unable to write a new novel. His manager (Chandrachoor Rai) urges him to complete the novel quickly. Abhi wants to write more meaningful literature and decides on an old-fashioned love story - which was now, 3 years in the making. This writer's block is called Bindu Shankarnarayanan (Parineeti Chopra). As Abhi says ''You know when a song comes on and you just have to dance. Bindu was that song. That silly infectious joyful tune you couldn't get out of your head - even if you wanted to."
Abhi's mother (Aparajita Auddy) & father (Rajatabha Dutta) lure him to Kolkata by saying they are getting divorced. Secretly they are worried about how Bindu has gotten into Abhi's head. They try to distract Abhi with the planning for his father's upcoming birthday party in a week's time. Abhi is also made to meet many prospective brides so he can move on from Bindu.
Abhi visits Bindu's old room, and stumbles across an old audio cassette of their favorite playlist, and it sends Abhi down memory lane - and as he waltzes in and out of his past and present through the songs in the mixed tape, he finally faces reality and reconnects with his roots, with his family and his novel starts writing itself.
Turns out Bindu used to live next to Abhi's, with her parents in Kolkata in 1983. She wanted to be a singer. Abhi and Bindu were childhood friends and grew up together in Kolkata. Bindu was full of life, full of trouble and very fickle minded. Bindu wanted to become a playback singer after seeing Waheeda Rehman sing a song in the movie "Guide". Abhi was completely infatuated with Bindu. They spend their childhood doing random pranks on everyone around them. Bindu loved her mother, but was afraid of his retired army father, who was an alcoholic. Abhi secretly fell in love with Bindu, much to his mother's dismay. However, he never expressed his true feelings to Bindu, choosing instead to remain happy as her friend. In 1999, they graduate college and start to go their separate ways.
One day, tragedy struck when Bindu's mother (June Malia) died in an accident. Heartbroken, Bindu blamed her father (Prakash Belawadi), who had been driving the car while drunk. Bindu runs away from home to Australia to her Mausi. Meanwhile, Abhi graduated and went to Bangalore to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Despite the distance, they stayed in touch through letters and postcards, during which Bindu revealed that she was engaged (a relationship she eventually ended). Over time, their communication stopped.
He gets news that Bindu has come back to Kolkata for her wedding, but true to form Bindu runs out on her engagement itself. Bindu and Abhi remain in touch through the period. Abhi runs into Bindu on a vacation in Goa and finds that she is also in Mumbai, pursuing her dream to be a singer. Bindu tells him she is engaged for the third time and genuinely likes the man. Abhi, heartbroken, returns to Mumbai, where he works in a bank but continues to stay in touch with Bindu.
One day, Bindu calls Abhi to a restaurant and reveals that her engagement has fallen through, as the man left her. Abhi tries to mend their friendship and goes out of his way to support Bindu. His girlfriend (Amrita Bagchi) leaves him, frustrated that he is always preoccupied with Bindu. Bindu begins working as a dubbing artist, and the two spend more time together. Abhi eventually realizes that he loves her. He declares his love in a proposal, which she accepts. All is good, Bindu gets an offer to work on a solo album, which is released. But the album is a commercial dud.
Devastated by the failure, Bindu distances herself, causing tension in their relationship. With the blessing of his family and Bindu's dad, Abhi proposes to Bindu, and she rejects it. She says that she can't be excited about the "normal" life that Abhi aspires to. Bindu adds that she isn't happy and needs to discover herself. She leaves for Bangalore, apologizing repeatedly to Abhi through emails, to which he never replies.
Abhi decides to make drastic changes to his own life. He quits his job at the bank & decides to become a writer. His publisher introduces him to the idea of horror based soft porn. They day his first book gets published, Bindu calls him from an unknown number. She speaks softly and tells that she is getting married soon. Hurt, Abhi tells her he is happy for her and wishes her well.
As the story returns to the present, it is raining in Kolkata, and Abhi takes shelter in a spot where he and Bindu used to spend time. He unexpectedly meets a young girl, who turns out to be Bindu's daughter. Bindu is now married to Mr. Nair. Abhi shows Bindu a manuscript of his love story with her, which has a happy ending. He tells her that the manuscript belongs only to him and Bindu and that no one else should read it. The film concludes with Abhi and Bindu dancing together at the birthday party, as Abhi reflects that while Bindu may now be someone's mother, daughter-in-law, or wife, for him, she will always be the same dear Bindu he met in his childhood.
