Rebecca Ferguson had originally turned down the part of Dr. Miranda North, British, Quarantine Officer, as she thought she would not live up to the standards of the movie. She expressed her anxiety and fear to the producer, who advised her to talk with Daniel Espinosa whose philosophy and ideas for the film impressed her enough for her to change her mind and eventually take part in the movie.

Near the beginning of the movie, before the crew 'catches' the sample pod, Hugh quickly comments that "I have a good feeling about this". This could be a nod to the famous line spoken in the "Star Wars" films "I have a bad feeling about this". This would be ironic as things in Star Wars work out in the long run, and things in "Life" do not.
