'You've caused an international incident': how my work mistake came back to haunt me

It was the Observer’s big scoop of 2003, and as a young journalist, I was asked to type up a top-secret memo. Now my mess-up has made it to the big screen

Have you ever wondered who’d play you in a film? I had, occasionally, until the day I got the answer. In spring 2018, a message pinged on to my phone via Facebook from a journalist friend. “So this is a bit weird,” it read. “A sister of a friend is playing you in a movie, apparently. You aware of this?” I wasn’t.

Hanako Footman is playing you in the film Official Secrets. She wants to meet you, like actors do. She saw we were pals and asked if I’d ask you. What did you do in that story?”

Official Secrets Trailer: Keira Knightley as Iraq War Whistleblower

Kayti Burt Jun 13, 2019

Keira Knightley, Matt Smith, Matthew Goode, and Ralph Fiennes star in the real-life story of British whistleblower Katharine Gun.

Keria Knightley is an actress often associated with period dramas—a choice, she told BBC News while promoting her film Colette, because it's where she finds the "strongest roles"—but her latest film, while technically a period drama, takes place much more recently than the films we usually think of as falling into that category.

The movie is called Official Secrets, and it tells the story of British whistleblower Katharine Gun (played by Knightley), a civilian translator at the Government Communications Headquarters intelligence office in the U.K., who leaked top-secret information to the press concerning illegal activities by the United States of America in their push for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Official Secrets has a killer cast. In addition to Knightley, it stars Matt Smith, Matthew Goode,

I caught the film at Sundance earlier this year and found it a little underwhelming. I wrote: The biggest problem with Official Secrets is that, other than having no energy to the direction, the story lacks focus. Gun is at the center of the story, but then the plot will …

Sundance Review: ‘Official Secrets’ Mines Interesting Subject Matter Uninterestingly

In January 2003, British government employee Katherine Gun was emailed a memo that requested she, and those she worked with at the Gchq (Government Communications Headquarters), listen in on the Un offices of six nations: Angola, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Chile, Guinea, and Pakistan. These countries held the crucial swing votes on the approval of the invasion of Iraq. Regarding this ask as illegal, Gun leaked the email to a friend with connections to The Observer. The information goes public and Gun’s life changes forever as the government charges her under the Official Secrets Act of 1989.

Directed by Gavin Hood and starring Keira Knightley as Gun, Official Secrets digs into this story with plenty of aplomb if not enough urgency. Such a languid pace at which this movie operates! Running at nearly two hours, the script, spends an admirable amount of time in its first act developing Gun as a character. Unfortunately,
